GHANA—President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) ‘s Phase II expansion project, highlighting its critical role in advancing Ghana’s healthcare sector.
The completion of this phase will substantially increase UHAS’s capacity to train a diverse range of health professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health practitioners.
This expansion is vital in addressing the escalating healthcare needs of Ghana’s growing population and the corresponding demand for a well-trained workforce.
With the addition of new facilities and resources, UHAS will be better equipped to offer comprehensive education and practical training, ensuring that graduates are thoroughly prepared to meet the challenges within the healthcare sector.
While reflecting on the project’s development, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the continuous need for UHAS to develop its infrastructural capacity to fulfill its mission effectively.
Under his leadership, the Ministers for Education and Finance, in collaboration with UHAS management and the then Vice-Chancellor Professor John Owusu Gyapong, successfully secured US$60 million in funding from the Chinese Government.
Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the President, Government, and People of the People’s Republic of China for their generous support, which significantly strengthened bilateral relations between the two nations.

Additionally, the efforts of the contractors, Nantong Sijian Construction Group, and Ghana’s former Ambassador to China, Ambassador Edward Boateng, were acknowledged for their pivotal roles in bringing this project to completion.
The new facilities will also boost cutting-edge research and innovation, enabling scientists and researchers to explore innovative advancements in medicine and healthcare delivery.
This progress is essential for developing locally relevant solutions to health challenges and positioning Ghana as a leader in health research within Africa.
To commemorate this significant occasion, President Akufo-Addo announced a personal donation of ten desktop computers and ten laptops to UHAS.
These devices are intended to support the administration and enhance the university’s capacity to provide high-quality education and services.
In addition, President Akufo-Addo took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the outgoing Chairperson of the University Council, the esteemed former Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr. Justice Jones Victor Mawulorm Dotse, for his exemplary leadership and contributions over the past six years.
He extended his best wishes for Mr. Dotse’s future endeavors and God’s blessings.
