Professor Janabi will begin his five-year term on 30 June 2025, taking over from Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who has led WHO’s African Region since 2015 and has played a key role in advancing health across the continent.
SWITZERLAND— The World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board has officially appointed Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi as the new Regional Director for the WHO African Region.
This appointment followed his nomination during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held on 18 May 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warmly congratulated Professor Janabi on his new role.
He also extended his best wishes to the government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania, Professor Janabi’s home country.
Dr. Tedros emphasized the importance of Professor Janabi’s leadership and experience, especially as the WHO works together with African countries to overcome ongoing health challenges.
He highlighted the need to use current global crises as opportunities to make the organization stronger, more sustainable, and more effective in serving the people of Africa.
In response, Professor Janabi expressed his deep gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to work tirelessly to improve health outcomes across the African Region.
He spoke with humility and a strong sense of responsibility, acknowledging the honor of serving in this critical position.
He emphasized that strengthening the foundation of WHO’s work in Africa will be a top priority throughout his term.
By ensuring that WHO’s actions align closely with the health priorities of individual countries, Professor Janabi believes the organization can achieve meaningful and lasting improvements in the lives of millions.
Professor Janabi is a well-known cardiologist, health strategist, and global health diplomat.
Over the years, he has dedicated his career to building stronger health systems, promoting equitable access to care, and encouraging innovation and collaboration to improve health outcomes across Africa.
His expertise and commitment make him well-suited to lead WHO’s efforts in the region.
As Regional Director, Professor Janabi will oversee WHO’s support for the 47 member states in Africa.
This support includes a wide range of activities such as strengthening health systems, preventing diseases, and responding to emergencies.
WHO and its partners work together to promote health, protect communities, and ensure that everyone has access to essential health services.
Professor Janabi’s five-year term begins on 30 June 2025, with the possibility of one reappointment.
He succeeds Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who has led WHO’s African Region since 2015 and played a key role in advancing health across the continent.
