YEMEN – Qatar Charity has joined hands with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to implement a new health and water, sanitation, and hygiene services (WASH) project in the Republic of Yemen.
According to an official statement published by Qatar Charity, the non-governmental organization has provided OCHA with over five million Qatari riyals (US$1.37 million) for emergency health and WASH services for displaced persons in Yemen.
The signing of this agreement comes as an extension of previous agreements signed by Qatar Charity with OCHA in Yemen over the past years.
Under the new agreement, Qatar Charity will work closely with OCHA in Yemen to improve access to health services in the country, with a special focus on the governorates of Taiz and Ibb.
The new initiative aims to improve access to primary healthcare services for approximately 61,625 displaced people.
As part of this initiative, Qatar Charity has tied up with OCHA in Yemen to provide financial assistance to nine health facilities in the governates of Taiz and Ibb.
This involves covering the costs of operating nine health facilities, the salaries of their workers, purchasing medicines, medical supplies, and the laboratory, as well as covering transportation costs for emergency situations.
At the same time, Qatar Charity and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen will jointly implement a new WASH project.
Within the framework of the signed agreement, the water project aims to establish two water collection tanks in the villages of Al-Barasha and Al-Juwaih in Taiz.
The objective of the project is also to monitor water quality in eight wells in Ibb Governorate and nine wells in Taiz Governorate and build 35 toilets.
It is expected that this project will contribute to promoting sound health practices by disseminating health and environmental awareness among target groups.
Through this project, OCHA’s teams in Yemen are aiming to alleviate the suffering of displaced persons in the Ibb and Taiz governorates and provide them with essential water and sanitation services.
The number of beneficiaries of the WASH project is expected to reach 118,721 people, according to the press statement published by Qatar Charity.
It is worth noting that Qatar Charity had previously signed three cooperation agreements during the years 2020 and 2021 with OCHA, worth more than 5 million Qatari riyals (US$1.37 million).
These agreements sought to implement projects in the health, water, and environmental sanitation sectors in three Yemeni governorates, namely Ibb, Al Hudaydah, and Hajjah.
Qatar Charity, in partnership with OCHA and in coordination with the Yemeni Ministry of Health, distributed medicines and medical supplies to eight health centers and units.
Additionally, the collaborative partners paid incentives to more than 80 cadres of medical workers in both the cities of Hajjah and Hodeidah.
The recent cooperation agreement will have an added focus on advancing efforts to improve access to health, water, and sanitation services for displaced Yemenis.
Yemen’s ongoing conflict has resulted in economic collapse and poverty, as well as inadequate basic services due to damaged infrastructure, lack of supplies and personnel, and limited public system capacities.
Over the years, Qatar Charity has worked closely with the OCHA to provide emergency response to the most vulnerable groups of displaced persons, host communities, and those affected by the crisis in Yemen.
Comparably, Qatar Charity, in cooperation with its partners from international organizations and within the framework of its “For Palestine” campaign, continues to distribute urgent relief aid in the field of food supply, shelter, non-food items, comprehensive relief, health, water, and sanitation.
