YEMEN – Qatar Red Crescent Society has introduced its newest health project to support cancer and malignant tumor patients in Yemen.
This project comes a few days after QRCS launched a livelihood support project for displaced families in Yemen aimed at improving the standard of living for 610 poor families in Aden, Abyan, and Lahij.
With the new project valued at approximately US$222,202, the Qatar Red Crescent Society aims to provide free-of-charge radiation sessions and diagnostic tests for 318 cancer patients in Yemen.
In a press release, Dr. Abdullah Dahan Thawabah, the General Director of the National Center for Cancer Treatment, said: “For the first time, we have received a qualitative project that adopts the free service of diagnosis through CT scans and MRI scans.”
Dr. Thawabah disclosed that Qatar Red Crescent is closely working with Yemen’s National Center for Cancer Treatment and several specialized centers to ensure that many patients benefit from cancer treatment as much as possible.
“The idea of the project is remarkable and encourages us to search for integrated solutions for cancer patients in cooperation with Qatar Red Crescent, which has had a positive impact on patients, doctors, and the center,” underscored Dr. Thawabah.
The scarcity of specialized and supporting institutions for cancer treatment, as well as the weakness of diagnostic and treatment services, are among the most significant challenges faced by patients in the Yemeni health sector.
Concerningly, the number of cancer patients in Yemen has exceeded 95,000 patients as of August 2023, excluding unregistered numbers.
As a result, Qatar Red Crescent seeks to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients by improving access to diagnostic and radiation treatment services.
Expressing his gratitude to Qatar Red Crescent for their generous assistance, Dr. Thawabah stated: “Today, cancer patients can access treatment for free. We hope it continues, and we will work with Qatar Red Crescent to provide essential services that have a significant impact on our patients.”
The QRCS-led project will not only help to ease the burden on specialized and supporting institutions but also mitigate the growing burden of cancer on patients, their families, and the community.
In his address, Dr. Mohammed Matar Juhaf, the Head of the Republican Educational Hospital in Sanaʽa, warmly welcomed the latest contribution of Qatar Red Crescent to the General Republican Hospital in the capital city of Yemen.
“The hospital is working hard to meet the needs of cancer patients in coordination with the National Center for Cancer Treatment and Qatar Red Crescent, which is a good contribution that we hope will lead to greater contributions,” stated Dr. Juhaf.
