NIGERIA— R—Jolad, a group of multi-specialist hospitals, has launched a new hospital facility in Gbagada, Lagos, called R-Jolad Plus.
The aim of the new facility is to provide specialized, quality, and affordable healthcare to the middle-income class.
R-Jolad is known as the “people’s hospital” and has been dedicated to providing comprehensive, quality, and affordable healthcare to low and middle-income earners.
The new hospital boasts a 30-bed premium facility that will offer specialized medical and diagnostic services.
In a statement, Dr. Funsho Oladipo, the Managing Director of R-Jolad Hospital said the launch of the new and modern facility was specifically designed to cater to the needs of discerning customers in a particular segment of the community.
He expressed the hospital’s continued passion for providing quality healthcare to all its patients and emphasized that the new facility would empower patients to choose the type of healthcare services they prefer.
The new hospital is equipped with a wellness center that has state-of-the-art suites, a physiotherapy center, and a post-surgical care center to improve outcomes.
R-Jolad Plus has been built to provide end-to-end care, starting from consultation, diagnostics and testing services, treatment protocols, recovery, critical care, and follow-up.
Dr. Abiola Fasina, the Chief Medical Officer of R-Jolad Hospital, stated that the level of quality care provided by the hospital will be exceptional.
He said, “The services we will render will be state-of-the-art. We have created the R-Jolad Plus Wellness Clinic as a means to promote preventive medicine.”
The hospital also offers maternal and antenatal care, an intensive care unit, and a wellness center for post-surgical recovery.
It hosts an occupational therapy and physiotherapy clinic for cardiac and stroke management, surgical, specialist consultants’ clinic, and advanced imaging and diagnostic services.
R-Jolad Multi-specialist Hospital group was founded in Lagos by Dr. Funsho Oladipo in 1982 and has built 4 centers with over 215 beds in Gbagada, Agege, Bariga, and Isolo.
Private healthcare facilities like R-Jolad are becoming more prevalent in Nigeria, as the public healthcare sector struggles to provide adequate healthcare services to its citizens.
According to a 2022 Lancet Nigeria Commission report, more than 50% of health services in Nigeria are provided by the private sector.
The statistic that more than 50% of health services in Nigeria are provided in the private sector indicates the significant role that private hospitals can play in helping governments fulfil the mandate of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Governments around the world, including Nigeria, have committed to achieving UHC, which aims to ensure that all people have access to quality healthcare services they need without suffering financial hardship.
However, achieving UHC requires significant investment in healthcare infrastructure, human resources, and financing, which may be challenging for low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria.
Private hospitals can help governments achieve UHC by filling the gaps in healthcare provision, particularly in underserved areas.
With a population of over 217 million people, there is a huge demand for healthcare services in Nigeria, and private hospitals have an opportunity to provide quality and affordable healthcare services to a significant portion of the population.
Nigeria ranks low on the Lancet 2017 Global Health Care Access and Quality index at position 142 out of 195 countries indicating a lack of access to quality healthcare services.
This ranking is due to the shortage of qualified healthcare workers in Nigeria, which stands at only 1.95 health workers per 1000 patients, which leaves many Nigerians seeking healthcare services from private institutions.
