BAHRAIN—The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland–Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) has announced a significant campus expansion project worth US$45 million, coinciding with its 20th anniversary celebrations.

This strategic development reinforces the University’s dedication to advancing human health, improving patient care, and enhancing societal well-being.

Over the past two decades, RCSI Bahrain has consistently achieved significant milestones, particularly through its School of Postgraduate Studies and Research, which places innovative, interdisciplinary, and patient-centred research at the core of its efforts.

The University continues to address key national, regional, and global health challenges, demonstrating its commitment to excellence in education and research.

In a recent agreement with Nass Corporation, RCSI Bahrain took a decisive step towards realizing its ambitious campus expansion plans.

The project will include a cutting-edge academic building covering 7,912 square meters to meet the growing demand for advanced medical education and research facilities.

This new space will feature state-of-the-art teaching and research labs, a modern library, social areas, and a large event hall.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, the University will integrate eco-friendly features such as solar panels, LED lighting, water conservation systems, and native landscaping to reduce heat and promote a healthy environment.

Additionally, bike racks and EV charging stations will support low-carbon transportation options for students and staff.

Speaking about this milestone, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Bahrain, expressed pride in the University’s achievements as it celebrates 20 years in Bahrain.

He highlighted the institution’s diverse network of over 3,000 alumni from 56 nationalities, including 459 doctors and 1,321 nurses, who have significantly strengthened Bahrain’s healthcare system.

Professor Otoom also noted that the planned expansion aligns with Bahrain’s vision to establish itself as a leading hub for healthcare and education in the region, supported by a highly skilled workforce and a welcoming community.

For his part, Munther Almudawi, Executive Director of Business Development for Healthcare, Education, and Tourism at Bahrain EDB, praised RCSI Bahrain’s legacy of innovation since its founding in 1784.

He expressed pride in RCSI Bahrain’s two decades of success and looked forward to the value the sustainably-led expansion would add to Bahrain’s education and healthcare sectors.

In addition to its academic and research contributions, RCSI Bahrain plays a key role in Bahrain’s economy.

A PwC Ireland National Economic Contribution Report estimated that the University contributes US$91 million annually to the national economy through its daily operations, student spending, and the economic activity generated by international students’ visitors.

The new academic building is expected to inject an additional US$102 million into Bahrain’s economy over the next four years, further boosting growth.

Beyond economic contributions, RCSI Bahrain supports 437 jobs, directly and indirectly, fostering local employment.

With 50% of the University’s 227 full-time staff being Bahraini nationals, RCSI Bahrain continues to prioritize professional development, ensuring the long-term growth and success of the local healthcare workforce.
