SAUDI ARABIA – The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has signed a US$39 million multi-year contribution agreement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
The SFD has contributed US$39 million to the Global Fund to help support the latter’s efforts in strengthening health and community systems worldwide.
These fresh funds directed to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria will be used to support the fight to end the world’s three deadliest epidemics.
The Global Fund will finance and support health initiatives that aim to prevent, treat, and care for people affected by HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria in over 100 countries worldwide.
Part of these funds will be used to establish resilient and sustainable systems for health centered on innovation, research & development, and local manufacturing of health commodities.
With the latest contribution, the SFD has expanded its strategic cooperation with the Global Fund as a way to move towards the attainment of universal health coverage (UHC).
This agreement demonstrates the critical importance of the Global Fund’s partnership with the Saudi Fund for Development and sets the stage for even greater collaboration in the coming years.
It comes nearly a year after the two strategic partners celebrated their 20th anniversary, which has been the main channel of Saudi contributions to the Global Fund since 2003.
According to the Saudi Fund for Development, the latest contribution is an increment of 30% from the previous amount the Kingdom pledged during the 6th Replenishment in 2019.
Saudi Arabia is ranked among the top donor countries offering official development assistance to low and medium-income countries to improve the lives of countless individuals, families, and communities.
The SFD has contributed over US$123 million to the Global Fund and, in turn, the Kingdom continues to secure critical funding for resources and tools to combat these infectious diseases.
In line with concerted efforts to drive long-term equitable development, the new multi-year pact cements Saudi Arabia’s standing as the 19th largest donor to the Global Fund to safeguard people’s health.
This new multi-year contribution agreement was presided over by the Chief Executive Officer of SFD, Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, and Global Fund Executive Director Peter Alexander Sands.
This pact was signed as per the directive of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud.
Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in Geneva, was also present at the official ceremony held at the Global Fund offices in Geneva.
Moreover, the signing ceremony is a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between the two organizations and a testament to their shared commitment to ending global diseases.
