EGYPT – Sean Jones has been selected as the new Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Egypt.

For nearly 40 years, USAID has worked with the Egyptian people to improve health by supporting maternal and child health, family planning, nutrition, immunization, and disease prevention activities.

Together with the Ministry of Health and Population, the independent agency of the U.S. federal government helps to improve the health of all Egyptian families.

In his new stint with USAID, Mission Director Sean Jones will oversee a portfolio of more than 45 projects delivered as part of the U.S. Government’s US$125 million in annual economic assistance to Egypt.

Mission Director Jones will work closely with the Egyptian Government, strategic partners, and the Egyptian people to build on shared priorities between the United States and Egypt in key areas.

In a press release, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo said: “Mission Director Sean Jones brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role with the USAID team in Egypt.”

Before his current stint, Jones was most recently USAID’s Mission Director in Ethiopia, overseeing the U.S. government’s largest assistance program in Africa.

Jones began his USAID career as a Presidential Management Fellow, working on project finance and the creation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation.

Jones progressed through various leadership roles at the U.S. Agency for International Development including serving as the USAID Mission Director in Mexico.

Additionally, Jones played a crucial role in leading the United States Agency for International Development’s operations in multiple locations such as Yemen, Iraq, Jordan, and Colombia.

He also previously served as the Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator in USAID’s Bureau for Food Security.

In this role, he was responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of Feed the Future programs in the field and the bureau’s efforts to engage and build partnerships with the private sector.

Before his remarkable stint with the USAID’s Bureau for Food Security, Jones served as the Deputy Coordinator for the U.S. Government’s Power Africa initiative.

Jones was a strategic consultant, trade analyst, and business operations specialist in the United States and in China before his career journey at USAID.

Moreover, the incoming Mission Director for USAID in Egypt holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan’s Gerald Ford School.

He earned a Bachelor of International Relations degree from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania before enrolling in postgraduate studies.

As a result, Mission Director Jones is expected to leverage his past experiences leading USAID missions in various countries to oversee the agency’s operations in Egypt.

This timely appointment aligns with the mission of the United States Embassy in Cairo to advance the interests of the United States and to serve and protect U.S. citizens in Egypt.

It builds on the significant progress made since the initial cooperation between the United States Government and the Government of Egypt.

Through USAID, the United States Government has invested more than US$30 billion in Egypt’s development.

These efforts have strengthened the partnership between the United States and Egypt and have contributed to the well-being of the Egyptian people.

Unquestionably, Mission Director Jones will bring in a well-coordinated, collaborative approach to addressing key development challenges in priority areas in Egypt.

Commenting on his new stint with the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Mission Director Jones said: “I am thrilled to join the USAID team in Egypt and to build on over four decades of partnership between the United States government and Egypt.”
