SENEGAL – Senegal is set to host the International Symposium (IS) on strengthening surgical, obstetric and anaesthetic care systems that will take place in Dakar City from May 4th to May 6th 2022.

The international symposium in Senegal will be a great opportunity to create a continental roadmap for strengthening access to surgical, obstetric and anaesthetic care in Africa by 2030.

It will take place over the two following events at the King Fahd Hotel in Dakar, Senegal: An Expert Meeting between May 4th – 5th and a Minister of Health Summit on May 6th.

It will feature gaps in surgical care, prioritized targets, implementation strategies and investments in healthcare delivery.

The global humanitarian organization Mercy Ships has organized the event in collaboration with the Government of Senegal, the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa, the West African College of Surgeons, Smile Train and other partners.

Mercy Ships uses hospital ships crewed by volunteers to deliver free, world-class healthcare services, capacity building, and sustainable development to those with little access in developing countries.

Shipboard consultations, surgery, training and mentoring are provided free of charge to local patients and professionals through donations from partner organizations and individuals.

The international charity provides humanitarian aid like free health care, community development projects, community health education, mental health programs, agriculture projects and palliative care for terminally ill patients.

The organization also works together with countries in West and Central Africa to strengthen healthcare systems through enhancing skills, providing equipment, training and improving healthcare infrastructure.

Mercy Ships aims to strengthen its partnerships with African countries and stakeholders in the health sector through the health event by bringing together over 200 participants including several African Ministers of Health.

Senegal’s President Macky Sall said that the symposium based on the challenges of surgical and obstetric care in Africa will involve health experts who will intervene on the 2020-30 vision for surgery in Africa and the issues at stake.

Macky Sall further welcomed the new ship of Mercy Ships to Senegal, the Global Mercy which is the largest civilian hospital ship in the world.

Following the International Symposium, the Global Mercy will be commissioned at the port of Dakar in Senegal on 2nd June 2022 to expand the organization’s life-changing operations and provide medical trainings to local caregivers.
