UAE – Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) has unveiled its new advanced Clinical Trials Unit in Abu Dhabi that will enable researchers to conduct research on key areas with unmet medical needs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
SSMC is a joint-venture partnership between Mayo Clinic and Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) that offers comprehensive care across nine departments with specialized expertise in 29 divisions.
Its health care experts utilize a multidisciplinary approach, advanced diagnostic technology, modern treatment techniques, and minimally invasive procedures to bring the highest standards of world-class care to the UAE and beyond.
The new advanced healthcare unit at SSMC will be led by a dedicated team of researchers who are set to conduct cutting-edge research and complex trials to help reduce the impact of some of the greatest health care challenges in various branches of medical science.
SSMC’s researchers will collaborate with national research institutions across the country on key medical specialties and subspecialties, including Neurology, Rheumatology, Hematology, Oncology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology and Pediatrics.
Moreover, SSMC’s Clinical Trials Unit is expected to become a leading medical research institute in the region performing unparalleled translational research at the interface of medicine, science, and technology.
It will leverage SEHA’s long-standing legacy, understanding of local demands, and Mayo Clinic’s expertise and extensive medical experience to ensure its team of researchers are able to address the immediate and future needs of the UAE’s population.
Supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), the inauguration of the Clinical Trials Unit at SSMC is in line with DoH’s ongoing efforts to enable the healthcare sector to expand research and development (R&D) operations in the Emirate and elevate the sector’s outcomes.
Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Research and Innovation Center at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said: “The launch of SSMC’s Clinical Trials Unit is part of a multi-phase approach, which sets the center on a 10-year growth course.”
He revealed that the pilot phase of the growth project involves the Unit’s core infrastructure and initial operations being established within the first two years of operations.
“Phase 2 will see the creation of a dedicated physical space, and finally in a third phase, the Unit will reach its mature innovation development capabilities, including business development and entrepreneurship,” Dr. Mannaei added.
In addition, the new research facility will help the UAE in responding to pressing local health challenges thus contributing to a more sustainable health care system. It is a monumental step towards positioning Abu Dhabi as a leading life-science research and innovation hub.
