USA — Siemens Healthineers has made a significant stride in the field of mammography with the introduction of their pioneering system, Mammomat B.brilliant, at the European Society of Breast Imaging congress in Valencia, Spain.

This revolutionary mammography system employs wide-angle tomosynthesis technology, boasting an impressive 50° tube movement angle, the widest available in the market.

What sets it apart is not just the angle but also its exceptional speed, taking a mere five seconds to craft a high-resolution 3D image, enabling precise identification of tissue abnormalities and microcalcifications.

In this breakthrough, Siemens Healthineers has achieved an acquisition speed of approximately 35% faster than other devices, significantly enhancing the patient’s comfort during examinations.

Verena Schön, Head of X-Ray Products at Siemens Healthineers, underscores the critical importance of delivering rapid results in mammography, especially in reducing the anxiety patients often experience during screenings.

Schön notes, “Our systems have to provide meaningful answers in the shortest possible time. This is especially important in mammography when the stressful uncertainty for patients must be reduced to a minimum. Only Mammomat B.brilliant offers this unique combination of speed, resolution, and wide angle.”

The system incorporates ComfortMove functionality, alleviating physical strain for operators and streamlining scan preparation, making it an invaluable asset for healthcare professionals.

Displaying patient information and workflow steps clearly from all angles on a prominent monitor, Mammomat B.brilliant ensures a seamless experience.

Notably, Mammomat B.brilliant is the first device from Siemens Healthineers to incorporate PlatinumTomo, a comprehensive innovation package encompassing wide-angle tomosynthesis, a cutting-edge detector, the newly developed Flying Focus Spot tube, and the Premia AI reconstruction to elevate image quality.

The Flying Focus Spot technology mitigates blurring caused by tube movements during tomosynthesis, resulting in sharp images even at high scanning speeds.

This advancement marks a significant departure from conventional static mammography, producing dynamic three-dimensional images.

Mammomat B.brilliant’s 50° Wide-Angle Tomosynthesis yields an impressive 43% increase in the detection rate for invasive cancer with just a single-view tomosynthesis scan, coupled with a 15% dose reduction.

Simultaneously, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance for MAGNETOM Viato.Mobile, a portable 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system designed for easy transportation to off-site locations.

This versatile 70-centimeter-bore scanner comes equipped with BioMatrix Technology and Deep Resolve image reconstruction, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to expedite brain scans by up to 70%.

This translates to enhanced image resolution and an improved signal-to-noise ratio, signifying a significant leap forward in MRI technology.

BioMatrix Technology further ensures consistent imaging results by personalizing MRI exams, and accommodating diverse patient anatomies and physiologies.

Jane Kilkenny, VP of Magnetic Resonance at Siemens Healthineers North America, emphasizes the profound impact of the MAGNETOM Viato.Mobile.

She states, “The MAGNETOM Viato.Mobile demonstrates our dedication to the mobile MR market by offering the latest and greatest technologies to patients who might lack convenient access to premium diagnostic MR scanners.”

In an exciting development, Siemens Healthineers subsidiary, Varian, is set to acquire Aspekt Solutions, a radiology and radiation oncology services provider based in Maryland, USA.

With over two decades of experience, Aspekt Solutions offers consulting services to radiology departments and imaging centers, specializing in medical physics, dosimetry, and strategy.

This strategic acquisition positions Varian to expand its advanced oncology solutions portfolio, addressing the growing demand for customized services in the sector.

Chuck Lindley, VP of Advanced Oncology Solutions at Varian, underscores the significance of this acquisition.

He notes, “With Aspekt Solutions, we can support more oncology centers with a holistic approach to addressing today’s challenges while also preparing for the fast-evolving future of cancer care.”

CEO Brian Pellegrini highlights their immediate focus on ensuring a seamless transition for customers and employees, emphasizing the smooth and mutually beneficial nature of the transition.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Siemens Healthineers acquired Varian in 2021 in a deal valued at more than US$16 billion.

The industry giant also teamed with hospital giant CommonSpirit earlier this year to announce the joint acquisition of Block Imaging.
