TANZANIA – The Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) has launched a Health Information System (HIS) data center at the Military College of Medical and Allied Sciences (MCMS)-Lugalo.

This initiative, supported by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) – Tanzania, aims to strengthen the provision of HIV services by providing a comprehensive data overview for efficient program planning, management, and decision-making.

WRAIR Country Director Mark Breda emphasized the significance of the launch, stating, “This is a great milestone as it will add value to the country’s initiative, especially in the realization of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 goals and the HIV treatment cascade.”

The data center is integrated with the Ministry of Health’s DHIS2, enabling real-time data access and informed decision-making.

TPDF Director of Medical Services Brigadier General Charles Mwanziva praised the WRAIR support, noting that it will enhance quality healthcare services across the 21 TPDF health facilities.

He highlighted the importance of timely data analysis: “With the available real-time data, healthcare providers will be able to respond promptly to patient needs by addressing challenges such as viral load tests and patient treatment evaluations.”

The collaborative effort involves procuring data center equipment, installing fiber optic network connectivity, and building capacity for TPDF team members.

WRAIR’s total investment through HJFMRI exceeds 900 million Tanzanian shillings(US$.338,310.00).

This initiative is funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and aims to improve the health system and sustain HIV epidemic control in Tanzania.

The launch of the TPDF HIS data center is a crucial step in enhancing the country’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in the context of HIV treatment and management.

It will enable the TPDF to respond effectively to healthcare challenges and ensure that healthcare professionals can intervene promptly to address patient needs.
