UAE-financed field hospital opens in Gaziantep after devastating Türkiye and Syria quakes

UAE – The United Arab Emirates has set up a field hospital in Gaziantep to provide essential care for the injured and most vulnerable after a massive earthquake hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria last week.

In the Turkish city of Gaziantep, a provincial capital about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from the epicentre of a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake, people took refuge in shopping malls, stadiums, mosques, and community centers.

More than 40,000 people were killed in Turkey and Syria in the earthquake, destroying entire towns and injuring hundreds of thousands of people, the Emirates News Agency reported.

Following the earthquake, the United Arab Emirates sent rescue teams to Turkey to help recover people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Several aid campaigns have also been set up in the emirates to collect donations and aid to be sent to countries affected by the earthquake.

The UAE-financed medical facility will work closely with the Turkish Ministry of Health and the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) to provide medical support to people affected by the quake.

The Emirates Relief Field Hospital in the Islahiye District of Gaziantep has started functioning with running medical, surgical, and emergency wards to provide assistance to earthquake-affected people.

The wards are equipped with 50 hospital beds and four intensive care beds.

The field hospital has 15 doctors of different specializations, 60 nurses, and skilled technical assistants to deliver medical care, including psychological rehabilitation, to those in need in Türkiye and Syria.

The 430,556 square feet field hospital will offer critical diagnostic and treatment services, including emergency and surgical operations, as well as intensive care.

Moreover, the United Arab Emirates has established a psychiatric clinic in the hospital to provide earthquake victims with the necessary psychological support.
