UAE—The UAE has taken a significant step forward in healthcare with the launch of its first national guidelines for treating multiple Sclerosis (MS).
In collaboration with its Medical Advisory Committee, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) spearheaded this initiative to provide comprehensive medical support for individuals living with MS across the country.
These guidelines were developed by a dedicated scientific task force after a thorough analysis of global best practices, tailored to the specific needs of the UAE’s MS community.
They take into account the diverse healthcare coverage, unique patient preferences, and regional characteristics of MS cases.
The primary goal is to ensure that the most effective treatments reach the largest number of patients while addressing challenges such as gaps in health insurance coverage.
An essential feature of these guidelines is their focus on treatment options for special populations, including pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children with MS.
By offering clear recommendations, they aim to assist healthcare providers in managing the condition across all demographics.
Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chair of the NMSS, highlighted the significance of this initiative, noting that the guidelines are rooted in the latest global evidence.
She emphasized that they bring new hope to individuals recently diagnosed with MS and those already living with the condition.
According to Dr. Al Kaabi, these guidelines not only provide detailed advice for physicians on MS-modifying therapies but also promote innovative treatments, such as stem cell therapy, for patients who do not respond to conventional methods.
The guidelines, developed through collaboration with various UAE health authorities, have been reviewed by leading neurologists from all Emirates.
Notably, they contributed to the development of Dubai Health Authority’s Multiple Sclerosis Ejadah Programme, further integrating them into the nation’s healthcare system.
Dr. Ahmed Shatila, Chair of the NMSS Medical Advisory Committee, described the effort as a groundbreaking advancement for MS care in the UAE.
He expressed pride in the task force’s work, which reflects the latest medical research and treatment breakthroughs.
Adding to this progress, the NMSS recently introduced the UAE’s first MS Helpline, providing a vital support system for the MS community.
Together, these initiatives mark a new era of hope and improved care for those living with MS in the UAE.
