SAUDI ARABIA—The United Nations has announced that 24 November 2024 will be ‘World Conjoined Twins Day,’ an annual event to emphasize the need to address the condition of conjoined twins.
This day aims to advocate for their treatment and care and to promote their well-being and social inclusion.
To further highlight the importance of World Conjoined Twins Day, Saudi Arabia will host the first-ever International Conjoined Twins Conference on 24–25 November 2024 in Riyadh.
This significant event will serve as a global platform to bring together medical experts, humanitarian organizations, and other stakeholders interested in the topic of conjoined twins.
The conference, which will be co-hosted by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) and the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, aims to shed light on the success stories and challenges associated with conjoined twin separation.
It will also focus on potential collaborations and recommendations to improve the lives of conjoined twins.
Among the many discussions and sessions planned, a panel discussion titled ‘Exploring the Multifaceted Impact of Separation on Conjoined Twins and Their Families’ will delve into the physiological, psychological, and social consequences of separation surgeries.
This panel aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of these surgeries’ far-reaching impacts on the twins and their families.
Since its inception in 1990, the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme has emerged as a leader in the field of conjoined twin separation.
The program has reviewed 139 cases from 26 countries and successfully separated 61 pairs of twins. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the program’s dedication and expertise.
Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, an Advisor to the Royal Court and Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) is a renowned pediatric surgeon and has headed the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme since its beginning. His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in the program’s success.
In addition to announcing the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution to observe ‘World Conjoined Twins Day’ annually on 24 November, Dr. Al Rabeeah expressed his pride in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing humanitarian efforts to help these special children.
He extended his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for their unwavering support of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme.
Their continued backing has been pivotal in establishing the program as a global leader in the field of conjoined twin separation.
