GHANA— Vodafone Ghana Foundation through its Homecoming Initiative, dubbed the Ashanti month, has assisted in the discharge of 27 patients from the mother and infant ward at the Manhyia District Hospital.

The foundation also donated of essential medical equipment to the hospital’s Antenatal Care unit in Kumasi, Ghana.

This involved the presentation of critical medical equipment that included a stadiometer, foetal doppler, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, and bedsheets, which are expected to bolster the hospital’s capacity to provide quality healthcare to its patients.

The activities at the hospital were in partnership with the Otumfuor Osei Tutu II Foundation in Kumasi.

The ‘Homecoming initiative’, now in its 11th year, has been instrumental in aiding patients who are unable to pay their medical bills in the region.

Since its inception in 2011, the initiative has discharged about 2,000 patients across the country, with 162 patients discharged in 2022 alone.

One of the beneficiaries of this year’s Homecoming event was Azuma Laliba Atiya, a new mother who was able to leave the hospital with her newborn to join her family at home thanks to the Foundation’s intervention.

Preba Greenstreet, Legal & External Affairs Director at Vodafone Ghana, who was present at the event, said, “Our Homecoming initiative is a testament to Vodafone Ghana Foundation’s commitment to making a real difference in the lives of Ghanaians.”

Greenstreet insisted that Vodafone Ghana Foundation believed in giving back to the community and was heartened to see the impact of its efforts on the smiles of the patients the foundation had been able to help.

“Today, these patients will be joining their families at home to celebrate their improved health and the birth of their new babies,” added Greenstreet.

Greenstreet also emphasized the critical role of quality healthcare in national development and that through their connected health programs, Vodafone Ghana Foundation remained committed to supporting the government in improving healthcare one community at a time.

“We are confident that these essential items will significantly enhance the care provided to the thousands of patients who visit the Antenatal Care unit each month,” Greenstreet added.

The Foundation’s efforts were also lauded by Kwabena Owusu Ababio, Head of Stakeholder Relations at the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation.

The Manhyia District Hospital is a leading healthcare provider in Kumasi, and its Antenatal Care unit sees approximately 4,000 patients per month.

Gladys Abban, the Department Director of Nursing at Manhyia District Hospital, expressed her gratitude for the donation.

Abban highlighted the significant impact the items would have on the unit and assured the Foundation that the items would be used for their intended purpose, and she encouraged the Foundation to consider the unit for future charitable initiatives.
