Zimmer Biomet CEO to lead 3M health business

USA — In a strategic maneuver that has captured the industry’s attention, Zimmer Biomet CEO Bryan Hanson is set to embark on a new leadership journey, assuming the helm of 3M’s Health Care Business Group as CEO.

This transformative transition is poised to reshape the landscape of both companies and reflects a pivotal shift in healthcare leadership.

Effective from September 1, Hanson’s appointment underscores 3M’s determined direction to spin off its Health Care Business Group by the close of 2023 or the early months of 2024. This move aligns with 3M’s strategic initiatives to fortify and refine its focus on various segments.

The immediate consequence of Hanson’s departure from Zimmer Biomet is the swift elevation of COO Ivan Tornos to the role of CEO, a decision that has not only solidified the company’s leadership but also earned him a seat on the board of directors.

Tornos, who has played a significant role in the company’s operations since 2021, brings a wealth of experience to the forefront.

With Hanson’s impending leadership of 3M’s Health Care Business Group, the company inches closer to its slated spinoff goal.

The healthcare business group, encompassing diverse sectors like wound care, health IT, and biopharma filtration, registered impressive sales of US$8.4 billion in the previous year.

3M’s CEO Mike Roman affirmed Hanson’s selection as the head of the new business, citing his industry expertise, growth-driving capabilities, and adeptness at fostering a strong organizational culture as key attributes that will bring immediate impact.

Hanson’s illustrious career trajectory includes his role as Zimmer Biomet’s CEO since 2017, where he spearheaded a significant turnaround for the company and orchestrated the spinoff of its spine and dental divisions.

Prior to this, he spearheaded Medtronic’s Minimally Invasive Therapies Group, showcasing his prowess in the medical technology sector.

In tandem with Hanson’s transition, 3M made additional strategic appointments. Former CEO of Humacyte, Carrie Cox, will assume the role of chairman of the board for the healthcare business, adding further depth to the leadership team.

Monish Patolawala will take on the role of CFO at 3M and oversee the intricate separation management processes essential to the upcoming spinoff.

The ripple effect of leadership changes also reverberated through Zimmer Biomet. Ivan Tornos, stepping into the role of CEO, has garnered industry respect for his notable journey within the company.

Having held pivotal positions since 2018, including President of Becton Dickinson’s Global Urology, Medical and Critical Care Division, Tornos is poised to steer Zimmer Biomet into a new era of innovation and growth.

CFO Suketu Upadhyay’s role has been significantly expanded to encompass the global operations and supply chain of Zimmer Biomet.
