GE HealthCare acquires Intelerad for USD2.3B to expand cloud-based imaging solutions

The acquisition aims to connect ambulatory care centers, teleradiology services, and hospital systems through unified imaging technology.

USA—GE HealthCare will acquire imaging software developer Intelerad for USD2.3 billion in cash as part of its strategy to build a comprehensive cloud-first diagnostic ecosystem.

The acquisition aims to connect ambulatory care centers, teleradiology services, and hospital systems through unified imaging technology.

Intelerad specializes in radiology and cardiology practices while also supporting clinical trials.

The company’s strong presence in outpatient settings will complement GE HealthCare’s existing in-hospital imaging operations.

Together, they plan to deliver solutions through an expanded software-as-a-service model that addresses the growing demands facing healthcare providers.

Peter Arduini, President and CEO of GE HealthCare, explained that hospitals and ambulatory care providers are experiencing increased imaging demand and rising patient volumes.

These organizations need simplified and unified workflows to manage their operations more effectively.

The acquisition represents an important step in GE HealthCare’s evolution from a medical device manufacturer to a comprehensive healthcare solutions provider, with particular emphasis on accelerating growth in recurring revenue streams.

Intelerad currently serves more than 1,500 healthcare organizations worldwide, managing over 230 million exams annually and maintaining a database of more than 8 billion medical images.

The company expects to generate approximately USD270 million in revenue during its first year under GE HealthCare’s ownership.

Notably, recurring sales will account for about 90% of these revenues, providing a stable foundation for future growth.

GE HealthCare has set an ambitious goal to triple its portfolio of cloud-enabled products by 2028.

This expansion will create new opportunities to integrate artificial intelligence programs into imaging workflows.

Roland Rott, GE HealthCare’s imaging chief, emphasized that combining GE HealthCare’s medical device capabilities and AI expertise with Intelerad’s cloud and imaging knowledge will help them better serve healthcare providers and drive digital innovation across the industry.

The outpatient enterprise imaging market represents a USD2 billion opportunity that continues to expand.

This growth stems from a nationwide trend toward performing more procedures and scans in outpatient settings rather than traditional hospital environments.

Jordan Bazinsky, Intelerad’s CEO, noted that GE HealthCare’s global reach and established relationships with hospital system decision-makers will accelerate the expansion of their connected imaging software.

The two companies anticipate closing the transaction during the first half of next year.

Intelerad’s majority shareholder, Hg Capital, along with minority investors TA Associates and Ardan Equity, will completely exit their investments upon completion of the deal.
