Egypt unveils 5-year Digital Health Strategy to transform the healthcare system by 2029

This system will ensure that Egyptians can access high-quality healthcare services securely and equitably through nationally unified health data platforms.

EGYPT—Egypt has introduced its National Digital Health Strategy for 2025–2029, marking a significant step toward modernizing the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar announced the ambitious plan during a global population and development conference in Cairo, held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

The strategy provides a unified roadmap for transforming the health sector through information and communication technologies.

 Minister Abdel Ghaffar explained that the initiative will establish an integrated, human-centered digital health ecosystem by 2029.

This system will ensure that Egyptians can access high-quality healthcare services securely and equitably through nationally unified health data platforms.

The minister emphasized that digital transformation will strengthen the healthcare system’s performance and resilience.

Data-driven decision-making will enable authorities to improve access to digital services while building the sector’s capacity to respond to emerging health challenges.

He noted that the strategy supports broader government efforts to develop modern digital health infrastructure and build public trust in the healthcare system.

During a high-level panel session, Abdel Ghaffar stressed that successful implementation requires coordinated action across all government bodies.

He described citizen health as a national priority and called for a whole-of-government approach with sustained institutional cooperation to achieve the strategy’s goals.

The Health Minister also outlined key focus areas for the coming years.

The government will upgrade digital infrastructure to make it more secure and adaptable while building the digital skills of healthcare workers.

Officials plan to expand innovation in service delivery, viewing digital transformation as an investment in people that directly improves the patient experience and advances Egypt’s sustainable development objectives.

Planning and Economic Development Minister Rania Al-Mashat highlighted health as a strategic pillar of economic growth and sustainable development.

She emphasized the need to align health objectives with national development plans and promote cross-sectoral integration to maximize social and economic benefits.

The panel discussion brought together several key figures in Egypt’s healthcare sector, including Ahmed Taha, who heads the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation, and Naeema Al-Gasseer, the WHO Representative in Egypt.

Mai Farid, CEO of the Universal Health Insurance Authority, and Tarek Moharram, CEO of Elevate Capital Management, also participated in the session.
