UK’s MHRA approves single-injection 7.2mg Wegovy pen for obesity management

The approval specifically applies to adults diagnosed with obesity and does not extend to individuals who are overweight with a BMI below 30kg/m² using Wegovy for weight management.

UK—The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved a new single-dose 7.2 mg semaglutide (Wegovy) pen for adults living with obesity.

This decision introduces a simplified option for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, allowing them to receive the full weekly dose in a single injection.

Previously, patients requiring the maximum 7.2mg dose had to administer three separate 2.4mg injections on the same day.

With this approval, eligible patients can now use a single injection to achieve the same therapeutic effect, reducing complexity and improving treatment convenience.

Eligibility and usage guidance

The approval specifically applies to adults diagnosed with obesity and does not extend to individuals who are overweight with a BMI below 30kg/m² using Wegovy for weight management.

It also excludes patients prescribed Wegovy for reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events.

Healthcare professionals will continue to guide treatment, ensuring that patients use the medication correctly.

Patients are advised to follow their prescriber’s instructions closely and consult their doctor, pharmacist, or nurse if they have any uncertainties regarding dosage or administration.

Dosing progression and administration

Treatment with Wegovy typically begins at a low dose of 0.25 mg per week.

Clinicians gradually increase this dose every four weeks, depending on the patient’s response and tolerance.

This stepwise approach helps minimize side effects while allowing the body to adjust to the medication.

Over time, patients may progress to higher doses until they reach the maximum recommended weekly dose of 7.2 mg.

The newly approved single-dose pen now enables patients at this stage to administer their treatment more efficiently with one injection instead of multiple doses.

Regulatory background and development

This latest approval builds on the MHRA’s earlier authorization in January 2026, which permitted the use of a 7.2mg weekly dose delivered through multiple injections.

The introduction of a single-dose format reflects ongoing efforts to improve patient experience and adherence to treatment.

By simplifying the delivery method, regulators aim to reduce the burden associated with multiple injections while maintaining the same clinical benefits.

This development aligns with broader trends in obesity management, where ease of use and patient compliance play a critical role in treatment success.

The availability of the single-dose 7.2 mg Wegovy pen marks a notable update in the therapeutic landscape, offering a more streamlined approach for eligible patients managing obesity under medical supervision.
