USA—Pfizer has entered into a licensing agreement with Chai Discovery that allows the pharmaceutical giant to integrate the company’s advanced artificial intelligence platform into its drug discovery and development pipeline.
The collaboration gives Pfizer early access to Chai’s newly introduced Chai-3 model, along with a customized version of the system trained to align with Pfizer’s proprietary datasets and internal research workflows.
Through this arrangement, Pfizer aims to accelerate the identification and design of new therapeutic candidates, particularly in areas where traditional research methods have faced limitations.
The partnership reflects the company’s broader shift toward AI-enabled research to shorten development timelines and improve success rates in early-stage drug discovery.
Chai-3 Model and AI-driven molecular design
Chai Discovery, a biotechnology company specializing in generative AI for molecular engineering, develops systems capable of predicting and reprogramming molecular interactions.
Its platforms allow researchers to design biomolecules with targeted functions, offering a more efficient approach to early-stage drug development.
The company’s latest model, Chai-3, represents a significant upgrade over its previous iteration.
It reportedly delivers improved performance in antibody design, including a doubled success rate compared to earlier models.
In addition, it enhances the ability to generate therapeutically viable antibodies and improves targeting of complex or previously “undruggable” biological structures.
Chai-3 builds on the earlier Chai-2 system, which introduced zero-shot antibody design and improved experimental hit rates.
That earlier platform also helped compress discovery timelines, reducing certain processes from several months to just a few weeks by streamlining molecular screening and candidate generation.
Leadership insights and collaboration goals
Chai Discovery co-founder Joshua Meier said the partnership places the company’s AI tools directly within one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical research environments.
He explained that combining Chai’s frontier AI systems with Pfizer’s scientific expertise and data resources creates an opportunity to expand the scope of biologics discovery.
According to him, the collaboration could help researchers pursue biological targets that have traditionally been difficult to address using conventional techniques.
Under the agreement, Pfizer becomes one of the first pharmaceutical companies to gain access to the Chai-3 model as part of its research toolkit.

The collaboration highlights a broader industry trend in which major pharmaceutical companies are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence to streamline research and development.

A few days earlier, the company also signed a global licensing and collaboration agreement with Innovent Biologics valued at up to US$10.5 billion aimed at developing a portfolio of 12 early-stage cancer therapies.
