Benjamin Mkapa Hospital becomes first in central Tanzania to offer non-surgical spinal pain treatment

The facility now stands as the first hospital in the country’s central zone to offer this advanced service to patients suffering from debilitating back conditions.

TANZANIA—Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) in Tanzania has achieved a significant medical milestone by introducing a revolutionary non-surgical treatment for spinal pain.

The facility now stands as the first hospital in the country’s central zone to offer this advanced service to patients suffering from debilitating back conditions.

Dr Maxgama Ndosi, a consultant neurologist at the hospital, announced that local specialists successfully performed the groundbreaking procedure on their first patient.

The treatment marked a historic moment for the region, demonstrating that Tanzanian professionals can now deliver world-class medical care without requiring patients to travel abroad or undergo complex surgical interventions.

The innovative treatment centers on a specialized spinal injection that delivers immediate and complete pain relief.

Dr Ndosi explained that the minimally invasive approach eliminates the risks and recovery time associated with traditional surgery.

Patients can return home on the same day they receive treatment, avoiding the extended hospital stays and rehabilitation periods that surgical procedures typically demand.

“The treatment involves a specialised spinal injection. Once we administer it, the patient’s back pain disappears completely,” Dr Ndosi stated.

He emphasized that this development represents a major advancement for healthcare accessibility in Tanzania’s central corridor, allowing citizens to receive sophisticated medical interventions closer to their communities.

The new service aligns with BMH’s broader mission to expand specialist and super-specialist care across the region.

As the hospital celebrates its tenth anniversary of operations, it has substantially increased its capacity in multiple advanced medical fields.

The institution has particularly strengthened its departments in neurology, cardiology, and other complex specialty areas that previously required patients to seek treatment in major urban centers or overseas.

The first patient to receive the non-surgical spinal treatment, who requested to remain anonymous, reported experiencing dramatic relief from chronic pain.

Before the procedure, the individual struggled with severe back pain that significantly impaired daily activities and mobility.

“I had severe back pain that made it hard to walk or lift anything,” the patient recalled.

“After the injection, the pain disappeared and I still feel no pain.”

The immediate results have validated the effectiveness of the treatment and offered hope to countless other Tanzanians suffering from similar conditions.

BMH’s achievement demonstrates the growing capabilities of Tanzania’s healthcare system and its commitment to bringing cutting-edge medical solutions to underserved regions.
