Roche to acquire Saga Diagnostics for USD595M to strengthen cancer monitoring capabilities

The acquisition will see Saga integrated into Roche’s subsidiary, Foundation Medicine, which focuses on advanced genomic profiling and personalised cancer care.

USA—Roche has agreed to acquire molecular residual disease (MRD) specialist Saga Diagnostics in a deal valued at USD 595 million, as it moves to strengthen its position in cancer monitoring and precision medicine.

The acquisition will see Saga integrated into Roche’s subsidiary, Foundation Medicine, which focuses on advanced genomic profiling and personalised cancer care.

Through this deal, Foundation Medicine will incorporate Saga’s Pathlight platform into its existing portfolio.

Pathlight is designed to guide treatment decisions by analysing how individual patients respond to therapy while also detecting potential cancer recurrence.

This integration is expected to enhance Roche’s ability to deliver more tailored and timely interventions for cancer patients.

Advanced technology integration

Saga introduced Pathlight in May 2025 as a next-generation MRD detection platform.

The system combines digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with whole genome sequencing (WGS) to identify structural genomic variants—large-scale DNA alterations that often drive cancer progression.

In addition, the platform enables highly sensitive detection of residual disease, even at very low levels.

Foundation Medicine plans to combine Pathlight with Roche’s existing diagnostic technologies, including the AXELIOS sequencing platform and the Digital LightCycler PCR system.

By integrating these tools, the company aims to build a more comprehensive and decentralised MRD testing solution that can be deployed globally.

This approach will also complement Foundation Medicine’s broader capabilities in WGS and circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) monitoring.

Rising Demand for MRD Testing
The acquisition comes at a time when cancer care is increasingly shifting toward precision medicine, where treatments are tailored to a patient’s genetic profile and disease characteristics.

As a result, MRD testing has become a critical component of modern oncology, helping clinicians detect relapse earlier and adjust treatment strategies accordingly.

Foundation Medicine CEO Dan Malarek highlighted the field’s growing importance, describing MRD as one of the fastest-expanding areas of diagnostics.

He noted that Pathlight has already demonstrated strong clinical performance in breast and colorectal cancers, with plans underway to extend its use to additional tumour types.

Growing competition in the market
Despite Roche’s expansion, competition in the MRD testing space continues to intensify.

Natera, an early leader in the field, recently submitted a premarket approval application to US regulators for its companion diagnostic MRD test, Signatera, following positive Phase III results in muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

The company has also strengthened its portfolio through its acquisition of Foresight Diagnostics in December 2025.

Meanwhile, Guardant Health has also been active, acquiring MetaSight Diagnostics for USD149 million to enhance its oncology offerings amid strong revenue growth in 2025.

According to GlobalData, the global cancer diagnostics market is projected to reach USD3.1 billion by 2030, reflecting sustained demand for advanced diagnostic solutions.
