USA—AI giant OpenAI has partnered with pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk to harness artificial intelligence for drug discovery and development.

Expanding AI capabilities across operations
Beyond drug discovery, Novo Nordisk will deploy OpenAI’s technology to streamline manufacturing efficiency, optimize corporate operations, and enhance its supply chain and distribution networks.
Simultaneously, OpenAI will help train Novo Nordisk’s global workforce, improving employees’ AI literacy and capability to work alongside intelligent systems.
Both organizations have prioritized ethical implementation by building strict data protection, human oversight, and governance frameworks into the partnership structure to ensure compliance and responsible AI use.
Strategic vision for healthcare innovation
Mads Sorensen, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk, described the partnership as a pivotal step toward leading the next generation of healthcare.
He emphasized that millions of people struggling with obesity and diabetes currently lack adequate treatment options, and many beneficial therapies remain undiscovered.
By integrating AI into daily operations, Novo Nordisk gains the capacity to analyze data at unprecedented scales, identify patterns previously invisible to human analysis, and test scientific hypotheses faster than ever before.
This accelerated approach enables the company to discover new therapies and bring them to market more rapidly.
Timeline and rollout strategy
Pilot programs will begin immediately across Novo Nordisk’s research and development, commercial, and manufacturing divisions, with full integration of OpenAI’s technology expected by year-end.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed confidence in AI’s transformative potential for life sciences, stating that the technology can help people live healthier, longer lives.

The partnership unfolds within a complex regulatory landscape.
The European Union’s AI Act took effect in August 2024, establishing comprehensive rules for the development, deployment, and use of AI across member states.
Meanwhile, the United States lacks unified federal AI legislation, though states such as California, New York, and Colorado have enacted individual frameworks.
In December 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish a national AI policy framework, aiming to centralize regulation and reduce conflicting state-level rules.
