Abu Dhabi DoH collaborates with MIT Koch Institute to establish AI cancer research hub

USA — The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has formed a strategic partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled oncology research, translational science and bioconvergence innovation.

The collaboration aims to turn scientific discoveries into practical healthcare solutions by combining MIT’s research expertise with Abu Dhabi’s expanding life sciences ecosystem.

 It also aligns with the UAE’s National Cancer Strategy and seeks to address population-specific cancer challenges, including those linked to climate and health.

Driving AI-powered cancer research

Under the agreement, the partners will launch large, multi-institutional clinical trials and translational research programmes.

They will also develop shared research databases and biobanks to support population-specific cancer studies.

In addition, DoH will participate in MIT’s BioConvergence Cancer Alliance, creating opportunities to strengthen collaboration in AI, precision medicine and oncology research.

H.E. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, said the partnership reflects Abu Dhabi’s vision of using innovation to improve health outcomes at the population level.

She noted that the collaboration will promote knowledge sharing, scientific discovery and applied innovation while creating new opportunities to develop, test and scale solutions that benefit patients in Abu Dhabi and globally.

Matthew Vander Heiden, MD, PhD, Director of MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, said tackling complex health challenges requires collaboration across scientific disciplines and international borders.

He added that MIT looks forward to connecting its research community with Abu Dhabi’s growing healthcare innovation ecosystem to explore new opportunities in oncology, AI and precision medicine while improving patient care.

Building talent and supporting innovation

Beyond research, the partnership will strengthen workforce development through physician-scientist fellowships, bilateral exchange programmes and joint educational initiatives.

These programmes will equip healthcare professionals with advanced skills in clinical oncology, artificial intelligence and computational biology.

The partners will also establish a bioconvergence incubator to help high-potential startups access mentorship, scientific expertise and investment needed to transform research into healthcare innovations.

Expanding global collaboration

Alongside the DoH agreement, Future Health – A Global Initiative by Abu Dhabi has joined MIT’s BioConvergence Cancer Alliance as a founding member.

The move gives Abu Dhabi access to a global network of more than 1,000 life scientists, engineers and researchers, opening new opportunities for collaborative research and scientific exchange.

The announcement comes as Abu Dhabi continues to expand its international healthcare partnerships.

During its recent strategic mission to the United States, the emirate signed 22 agreements spanning genomics, AI, biotechnology and precision medicine.

Recent collaborations include partnerships with Boehringer Ingelheim to advance genomics research and Biocom California to establish a life sciences innovation corridor linking Abu Dhabi with California’s biotechnology ecosystem.
