Moscow opened access to its MosMedAI platform to healthcare institutions across Russia in 2024, following a decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

RUSSIA—Moscow is expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology across Russia, with its medical AI systems having processed more than 16 million diagnostic studies to date.
The city is sharing its experience and technology with healthcare institutions in other regions as part of efforts to increase the use of AI in medical imaging and support faster disease detection.
MosMedAI expands nationwide
Moscow opened access to its MosMedAI platform to healthcare institutions across Russia in 2024, following a decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The platform brings together computer vision services designed to analyse medical images and identify potential abnormalities.
According to the Moscow Mayor, the city has prioritised the development of AI technologies within its healthcare system in recent years and is now scaling these capabilities nationwide.
“Over the past few years, we have placed significant emphasis on developing AI technologies in Moscow’s healthcare system and have achieved substantial results,” the mayor said.
The platform provides regional healthcare organisations with access to AI services that have undergone multiple stages of testing and demonstrated their effectiveness within Moscow’s healthcare network.
These services are designed to complement physicians’ work by providing additional information during the diagnostic process.
AI supports medical image analysis
AI algorithms can identify areas of a medical image that may indicate pathology, perform specific measurements and provide additional diagnostic information to physicians.
The technology is intended to support, rather than replace, healthcare professionals by helping them identify potential diseases at an earlier stage.
In Moscow, the AI systems can currently detect as many as 14 different pathologies from a single medical image.
The technology can therefore assist radiologists in reviewing large volumes of diagnostic data while highlighting findings that may require closer examination.
The system analyzes several types of medical images, including mammograms, fluorograms, chest X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans of the brain and thoracic organs.
MosMedAI platform reaches 75 regions
More than 2,000 medical organisations across 75 Russian regions are now connected to the MosMedAI platform.
These institutions can access 18 AI-powered services to support the analysis of diagnostic images.
Meanwhile, Moscow continues to expand the range of conditions that its AI systems can detect.
Since April, the platform has also been able to identify signs of scoliosis in spinal X-rays, adding another application to its growing portfolio of diagnostic tools.
The Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine has so far tested 70 AI services as Moscow continues to assess and develop technologies for medical image analysis.
The centre’s work includes evaluating AI applications before they are deployed within the healthcare system, with the aim of ensuring that the tools can provide reliable support for clinical decision-making.
