USA—Vertex Pharmaceuticals has entered into a new research collaboration with Canadian biotechnology company AbCellera to develop next-generation T-cell engager therapies for autoimmune diseases, with the potential to expand into other therapeutic areas in the future.
The partnership reflects growing industry interest in antibody-based medicines that can precisely direct immune cells to eliminate harmful targets while reducing damage to healthy tissues.
Under the agreement, AbCellera will receive an upfront payment of US$28 million and will also be eligible for additional milestone payments and tiered royalties on future product sales.
AbCellera will oversee discovery and early-stage development activities, while Vertex will finance all research and development costs.
Vertex will also hold exclusive rights to further develop, manufacture and commercialize any therapies that emerge from the collaboration.
The companies aim to combine AbCellera’s antibody discovery technologies with Vertex’s expertise in advancing innovative medicines, creating a platform for new treatments that could address diseases driven by immune system dysfunction.
Growing interest in T-cell engager therapies
The agreement comes as pharmaceutical companies increasingly invest in T-cell engager technologies, which are designed to bring immune T cells into close contact with disease-causing cells so they can be destroyed more effectively.
Several T-cell engager therapies have already gained regulatory approval for certain blood cancers and other malignancies, demonstrating the promise of this therapeutic approach.
However, researchers are now working to broaden the technology’s use beyond oncology.
Autoimmune diseases have emerged as one of the most active areas of development, with many experimental therapies focusing on selectively eliminating abnormal B cells believed to drive chronic inflammation and tissue damage.
Scientists believe this strategy could offer a less complex alternative to personalized cell therapies, which have also produced encouraging clinical results but remain expensive and difficult to manufacture at scale.
The growing commercial potential has attracted significant investment across the pharmaceutical sector.
In May, UCB agreed to acquire Candid Therapeutics for US$2.2 billion, while Merck & Co., Sanofi and Gilead have each signed notable partnerships or licensing agreements aimed at strengthening their autoimmune disease pipelines.
Vertex continues portfolio diversification
For Vertex, the collaboration represents another step in its strategy to diversify beyond its highly successful cystic fibrosis franchise, which generates more than US$10 billion in annual revenue.
Although the company has built its reputation and market value through medicines targeting the rare genetic disorder, it has steadily expanded into new therapeutic areas to support future growth.
Its autoimmune ambitions gained momentum with the acquisition of Alpine Immune Sciences two years ago, securing a promising drug candidate that recently achieved positive late-stage clinical trial results.
More recently, Vertex broadened its focus into endocrine disorders through its largest acquisition to date, completing the US$10 billion purchase of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals and further strengthening its pipeline beyond cystic fibrosis.
