SOPHiA GENETICS secures multi-year agreement with AstraZeneca for precision oncology testing

Both programmes will combine SOPHiA GENETICS’ decentralised clinical trial assay capabilities with AstraZeneca’s oncology therapies.

SWITZERLAND—SOPHiA GENETICS has entered a global, multi-year partnership with AstraZeneca to develop, validate and launch two companion diagnostic applications designed to support precision oncology therapies.

The collaboration will focus on making genomic testing more widely accessible by enabling laboratories in different countries to use the same diagnostic solutions when new therapies become available.

Two diagnostic programmes

Under the agreement, SOPHiA GENETICS will develop its Solid Tumor application as a decentralised companion diagnostic.

 The application will be designed to identify relevant biomarkers in patients with solid tumours and support treatment decisions based on their molecular profiles.

The company will also develop and validate a haematological oncology application for a companion diagnostic programme targeting blood cancers.

Both programmes will combine SOPHiA GENETICS’ decentralised clinical trial assay capabilities with AstraZeneca’s oncology therapies.

The companies aim to make the diagnostic solutions available across laboratories and geographic regions when the corresponding therapies launch.

This approach is intended to help reduce delays between the introduction of a new treatment and the availability of the testing required to identify eligible patients.

Ross Muken, CEO of SOPHiA GENETICS, said breakthrough therapies can only benefit patients who can be identified in time to receive them.

He added that the partnership supports a future in which access to precision diagnostics does not depend on geography, allowing laboratories to run the same tests to consistent standards from the first day of a therapy launch.

“We believe these programmes are what that future looks like in practice,” Muken said.

“Bringing the right therapy to the right patient, in any country and any laboratory, is the work that will define the next generation of precision medicine.”

Expanding access to genomic testing

SOPHiA GENETICS plans to combine biomarker detection with rapid diagnostic deployment to shorten the time between therapy availability and patient access.

Its data-driven platform supports the analysis of patient populations and genomic data, helping healthcare providers make informed clinical decisions.

The company’s companion diagnostic capabilities cover several stages of development, including clinical trial assay design and development to support patient enrolment.

They also include assay validation and regulatory submission processes across major markets, including the US, EU and Japan.

Through the SOPHiA DDM Platform and MaxCare Program, laboratories can locally adopt and deploy genomic applications while maintaining access to standardised workflows and analysis capabilities.

The partnership with AstraZeneca builds on SOPHiA GENETICS’ broader efforts to expand genomic testing and precision medicine.

In November 2025, the company partnered with Element Biosciences to advance genomic sequencing technologies and workflows for precision medicine.

The latest agreement will see SOPHiA GENETICS apply its decentralised diagnostic approach to both solid tumours and haematological cancers as the companies work to support broader access to biomarker-driven oncology treatments.
