TİKA delivers C-Arm System to Tunisia Hospital to expand orthopedic surgery capacity

Its orthopedic department handled more than 25,000 outpatient consultations and treated over 4,500 inpatients in 2025.

TUNISIA—Mohamed Tahar Maamouri University Hospital is strengthening its orthopedic surgical services after receiving a modern C-arm fluoroscopy system from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).

The hospital serves about one million people in Tunisia’s Cap-Bon region and operates the area’s only specialized orthopedic center.

Its orthopedic department handled more than 25,000 outpatient consultations and treated over 4,500 inpatients in 2025.

Demand for orthopedic services rises sharply during the summer months as tourism significantly increases the region’s population.

The period also brings more trauma cases, particularly injuries linked to road traffic accidents.

As surgical demand increased, limited access to C-arm equipment in the existing operating theatres caused delays and placed additional pressure on the orthopedic department.

New equipment supports faster surgery

To address the equipment shortage, TİKA supplied and delivered a modern surgical C-arm fluoroscopy system to the hospital.

The equipment is designed to strengthen the technical capacity of the orthopedic operating theatre and support surgeons during a wide range of procedures.

C-arm systems provide real-time X-ray images during surgery, allowing doctors to monitor bone alignment and accurately position implants without repeatedly moving patients between the operating theatre and imaging facilities.

The technology is particularly useful in orthopedic and trauma surgery, where precise positioning can directly affect the success of an intervention.

The system also supports minimally invasive procedures, which can reduce the need for larger surgical incisions and help surgeons perform complex operations with greater precision.

Surgical capacity expected to increase

The newly delivered equipment is now in active use at the hospital.

Its availability is expected to improve the flow of orthopedic procedures by reducing waiting periods between operations and allowing surgical teams to manage cases more efficiently.

Hospital authorities project that daily surgical capacity could increase by about 20 percent following the equipment’s introduction.

The additional capacity is also expected to reduce the number of patients waiting for orthopedic procedures and help shorten hospital stays.

For emergency cases, improved access to imaging during surgery is expected to support faster interventions. The equipment will also help the hospital manage scheduled procedures more efficiently, improving access for patients who require orthopedic treatment.

The project forms part of TİKA’s ongoing support for Tunisia’s healthcare sector.

The agency has implemented initiatives focused on strengthening medical infrastructure, expanding treatment capacity and improving access to healthcare services.
