Axogen to acquire BioCircuit Technologies for US$200M to expand peripheral nerve repair portfolio

Axogen expects to complete the transaction in the fourth quarter of 2026, adding BioCircuit’s NerveTape to its portfolio.

USA—Florida-based Medtech Company Axogen has agreed to acquire BioCircuit Technologies for US$200 million in cash, strengthening its position in the surgical peripheral nerve repair market.

Axogen expects to complete the transaction in the fourth quarter of 2026, adding BioCircuit’s NerveTape to its portfolio.

Axogen currently markets the Avance Nerve Graft and the Axoguard range of nerve connectors and protectors.

NerveTape expands Axogen’s portfolio

NerveTape became the first sutureless peripheral nerve repair technology to receive clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2022.

The device uses miniature hooks to bring the two ends of a severed nerve together, holding them in place to support healing.

The technology is designed to reduce the need for advanced microsurgical skills during nerve repair.

Axogen expects this feature to support wider use of NerveTape among surgeons and across different healthcare settings.

Following the acquisition, Axogen plans to use its direct sales network and established relationships with hospitals and surgeons to accelerate adoption of the technology.

The company will also acquire BioCircuit’s underlying technology platform, creating opportunities to develop additional products and explore new clinical applications.

Michael Dale, Axogen’s president and CEO, said NerveTape makes nerve repair simpler and more accessible for surgeons while providing a different approach to a technically demanding part of nerve surgery.

Lindsey Hartley, Axogen’s chief financial officer, described NerveTape as an attractive growth asset that could contribute to the company’s revenue growth over time.

Competition in sutureless nerve repair

Axogen’s acquisition comes as other companies advance alternative approaches to sutureless peripheral nerve repair.

Tissium, for example, is developing COAPTIUM CONNECT, which recently received FDA De Novo authorization for peripheral nerve repair.

Unlike NerveTape, COAPTIUM CONNECT uses a light-activated surgical gel to join severed nerve ends inside a bioresorbable, three-dimensional printed chamber.

The approach avoids direct mechanical attachment of the nerve ends and is designed to minimise tissue trauma during repair.

Meanwhile, researchers are also developing electronic stimulation technologies for peripheral nerve repair.

Neuraptive Therapeutics recently entered an exclusive licensing agreement with Washington University in St. Louis covering a bioresorbable peripheral nerve repair device.

The licensed technology is intended for use in surgical nerve repair, adding another approach to a market that is seeing growing development of alternatives to conventional nerve suturing.
