Biodeal Pharmaceuticals acquires sterile injectable facility in India

The Paonta Sahib site covers 14 acres and includes approximately 39,000 square metres of built-up manufacturing space.

INDIA—Biodeal Pharmaceuticals has acquired a sterile injectable manufacturing facility in Paonta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh, India, from Biological E. to expand its manufacturing capabilities and serve regulated global markets.

The acquisition adds sterile injectable production to Biodeal’s existing manufacturing platform and gives the company access to established regulatory credentials, specialised equipment and additional production capacity.

The facility manufactures general injectables and Carbapenems in vial formats, with an annual capacity of about 135 million units.

Facility expands injectable manufacturing capacity

The Paonta Sahib site covers 14 acres and includes approximately 39,000 square metres of built-up manufacturing space.

It is equipped with German-made Groninger processing lines and has 17 production lines at full capacity.

Biodeal said the facility can add about 30 million units through near-term expansion.

The company also plans to introduce pre-filled syringe and lyophilised product formats, broadening its injectable manufacturing capabilities and allowing it to support pharmaceutical products with different delivery and stability profiles.

Biodeal is also pursuing Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S) and European Union accreditation for the site as it seeks to enter additional regulated markets.

The facility is located about 50 kilometres from Biodeal’s existing manufacturing site in Nalagarh, also in Himachal Pradesh.

The acquisition therefore expands the company’s presence within an established pharmaceutical manufacturing corridor while creating opportunities to share operational capabilities across nearby facilities.

“This acquisition is a deliberate step, not an opportunistic one,” said Anurag Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Biodeal Pharmaceuticals.

He added that the facility provides the company with a manufacturing base for regulated markets and capabilities that would otherwise take years to develop.

Biological E refocuses manufacturing investment

Biodeal acquired the facility from Hyderabad-based Biological E., which has operated in the vaccine and pharmaceutical sector for nearly seven decades.

Biological E. is divesting the Paonta Sahib facility as it directs investment towards its new vaccine research and development and contract development and manufacturing organisation campus in Telangana.

Mahima Datla, Managing Director of Biological E., said the company viewed the sale as part of its continued investment in the Telangana campus and expressed confidence that Biodeal would build on the facility’s existing manufacturing capabilities.

The acquisition also expands Biodeal’s offering for pharmaceutical customers seeking injectable manufacturing services.

Its portfolio will include Carbapenems used in the treatment of serious bacterial infections, including drug-resistant infections, alongside general injectable products.

Planned additions of pre-filled syringe and lyophilised formats will further extend the range of products that the facility can manufacture.

Biodeal’s pursuit of PIC/S and EU accreditation is part of the company’s broader effort to meet regulatory requirements in additional international markets.

The expansion also positions the Paonta Sahib facility within the company’s wider manufacturing network, alongside its existing operations in Nalagarh.
