USA—GE HealthCare has received a CE mark for its Photonova Spectra photon counting computed tomography (CT) system, clearing the way for commercial activity in countries that recognise CE marking.
The regulatory milestone follows clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and approval in Japan in March 2026.
Together, the approvals expand the markets in which GE HealthCare can offer the new CT technology.

GE HealthCare designed the system to help clinicians detect, characterise and monitor diseases across a range of clinical applications.
Chad Rowland, global executive director of CT at GE HealthCare, said the company developed Photonova Spectra to meet the needs of clinicians and patients worldwide.
He said the system’s Deep Silicon detector technology allows it to capture detailed spectral information during every scan, supporting both research and routine clinical care.
Faster imaging and streamlined workflows
Photonova Spectra supports rapid image acquisition and aims to simplify CT workflows by using a universal, full-fidelity imaging approach.
According to GE HealthCare, this can reduce the need for multiple examination protocols and help clinicians obtain the information they need from a single scan.
The system also handles data volumes of up to 50 times those of conventional CT scanners.
GE HealthCare has combined the technology with Nvidia’s accelerated computing platform and Compute Unified Device Architecture-optimised reconstruction to process the large volumes of imaging data generated by photon-counting CT.
The company is conducting clinical collaborations to evaluate the technology across several medical specialties.
UZ Brussel, part of Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, and Rigshospitalet in Denmark are working with GE HealthCare to assess Photonova Spectra in cardiology, neurology, oncology and musculoskeletal imaging.
Investment in imaging technology
The CE marking follows more than US$5 billion in innovation investment by GE HealthCare.
The company expects products developed through these investments to contribute between 1% and 2% to revenue growth across its portfolio.
GE HealthCare has also expanded its healthcare partnerships in the US.
In July, the company entered into a 10-year strategic alliance with Catholic Health, valued at about US$500 million, to expand access to precision diagnostics, advanced imaging, and artificial intelligence-enabled technologies across Catholic Health’s Long Island network.
The agreement forms part of GE HealthCare’s broader efforts to deploy advanced imaging and digital technologies across healthcare settings.
