MIDAR partners with Gruppo GKSD to build new medical complex in Cairo

EGYPT—Egyptian real estate developer MIDAR for Investment and Urban Development has partnered with Italy’s Gruppo GKSD to establish a comprehensive medical, educational, and research facility within MADA City in New Cairo.

The collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, marks a significant step in bringing world-class healthcare infrastructure to the region.

The ambitious project requires between €500 million and €600 million (USD577 million–USD693 million) in investment, positioning it among the largest healthcare ventures in Egypt.

Gruppo GKSD, which operates through GKSD Investment Holding and its parent company Gruppo San Donato, brings decades of healthcare expertise to the table.

As Italy’s leading private healthcare provider, Gruppo San Donato manages over 150 facilities and treats more than 6.5 million patients annually across more than 50 medical specialties.

Master-planned healthcare destination

The proposed medical city will serve as a comprehensive health and education hub.

The facility will include hospitals with a total of 500 beds, a medical faculty designed to educate approximately 5,000 students, and a dedicated research and training centre.

This integrated approach combines clinical care with academic advancement and scientific innovation.

MIDAR’s leadership emphasizes that the initiative aligns with the company’s broader vision for the region.

Chief Executive Officer Ayman El-Kousey explained that both MADA City and Mostakbal City are planned to accommodate roughly one million residents combined, creating substantial demand for premium services.

“East Cairo and the New Administrative Capital represent high-density urban centres requiring services that meet global standards,” El-Kousey noted, highlighting how such infrastructure enhances both quality of life and property values.

For Gruppo GKSD, the partnership demonstrates confidence in Egypt as an investment destination.

Chairman Kamel Ghribi stated that the project leverages Italian design and engineering excellence, alongside advanced healthcare delivery, to create lasting value in Egypt’s medical sector.

The venture reflects broader efforts to attract foreign direct investment and establish Egypt as a preferred location for international capital.

Expanding healthcare operations

Beyond the MADA City project, Gruppo GKSD and Gruppo San Donato have simultaneously secured a management agreement with Egypt’s Ministry of Health for Heliopolis Hospital in Cairo.

The 433-bed facility will operate specialised centres for oncology, cardiology, neurosurgery, paediatrics, maternal care, and organ transplantation.

Expected to serve approximately one million people upon opening in 2027, the hospital’s management contract spans 15 years.

The Italian healthcare group’s expansion into Egypt extends beyond new ventures.

Gruppo GKSD currently operates major hospitals across Iraq through public-private partnership models, demonstrating its experience in managing complex healthcare operations in the Middle East and North Africa.
