MTRH expands cardiac diagnostics with CT coronary angiography services

KENYA—Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has expanded its cardiac diagnostic services with the introduction of CT Coronary Angiography, using its new 128-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner.

The Directorate of Radiology and Imaging at MTRH announced the availability of the service as the hospital continues to strengthen access to advanced diagnostic procedures.

CT Coronary Angiography is a non invasive imaging procedure that uses CT technology to produce detailed images of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply the heart with blood.

The procedure enables clinicians to examine these vessels for narrowing or blockages that may affect blood supply to the heart.

By providing detailed images of the coronary arteries, the examination can support the assessment of patients with suspected coronary artery disease and help clinicians make informed decisions about further management.

The service adds to MTRH’s diagnostic capacity by providing clinicians with access to advanced cardiac imaging without the need for an invasive procedure in appropriate cases.

Expanded access through SHA

MTRH said the CT Coronary Angiography service is covered by the Social Health Authority (SHA), allowing eligible patients to access the diagnostic procedure through the national health insurance system.

The inclusion of the service under SHA is expected to support access to advanced cardiac imaging for patients who require specialised diagnostic assessment.

The hospital has also linked the expansion of the service to the National Equipment Support Programme (NESP), a government initiative designed to strengthen healthcare delivery through the provision, installation and maintenance of essential medical equipment.

Through the programme, MTRH has continued to receive modern medical equipment aimed at improving its capacity to provide specialised diagnostic and treatment services.

The 128-slice CT scanner provides the imaging platform required for CT Coronary Angiography and expands the range of examinations available through the hospital’s Directorate of Radiology and Imaging.

Strengthening specialised healthcare

MTRH said the development reflects ongoing efforts by the Government, through the Ministry of Health, and the hospital management to improve specialised diagnostic services.

The hospital has increasingly incorporated advanced technologies into its diagnostic services as it seeks to provide patients with access to modern medical care.

The availability of CT Coronary Angiography also gives clinicians an additional imaging option when assessing patients who require detailed evaluation of the coronary arteries.

MTRH said the service forms part of broader efforts to strengthen its diagnostic infrastructure and improve the availability of specialised healthcare services.

With the 128-slice CT scanner now supporting coronary imaging, the hospital can provide a CT-based assessment of coronary arteries alongside other diagnostic examinations performed using the technology.

The expansion comes as healthcare facilities continue to invest in diagnostic technologies that support earlier identification and assessment of cardiovascular conditions.

At MTRH, the new service brings advanced cardiac imaging into the hospital’s range of specialised diagnostic services while supporting its broader programme of modernising medical equipment and expanding access to specialised care.
