Thermo Fisher completes US$1.075B sale of microbiology business to Astorg

The sale transfers a business that develops and supplies microbiology products used across clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical manufacturing and food safety testing.

USA—Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO) has completed the sale of its microbiology business to Astorg, a pan-European private equity firm, for approximately $1.075 billion.

The transaction comprises cash consideration and a US$50 million seller note.

The sale transfers a business that develops and supplies microbiology products used across clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and food safety testing.

The business generated approximately US$645 million in revenue in 2025 and previously operated within Thermo Fisher’s Specialty Diagnostics segment.

Microbiology business changes ownership

The microbiology business provides antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) products and culture media solutions that help laboratories identify microorganisms and determine their susceptibility to antimicrobial medicines.

Its portfolio serves a broad range of customers, including clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies and organizations involved in food safety testing. These products support laboratory workflows that require reliable identification and analysis of microorganisms.

By completing the transaction, Thermo Fisher has transferred the microbiology business to Astorg as part of its portfolio management strategy. The private equity firm will now oversee the business and its operations under new ownership.

Astorg expands healthcare portfolio

Astorg is a European private equity investor that focuses on investments in healthcare, technology and other specialized sectors.

The acquisition adds Thermo Fisher’s microbiology operations to Astorg’s portfolio and strengthens its presence in the healthcare market.

The transaction also separates the microbiology business from Thermo Fisher’s broader Specialty Diagnostics operations.

The segment provides a range of diagnostic products and services designed to support healthcare providers, laboratories and other customers.

The microbiology business’s US$645 million revenue in 2025 highlights the scale of the operations being transferred to Astorg.

Its products serve customers across multiple markets, including healthcare, pharmaceutical production and food safety.
