Philips has pioneered helium-free MRI technology, installing over 2,000 of its 1.5T BlueSeal MRI systems globally and conserving more than 6 million liters of liquid helium.

USA— Royal Philips, a global health technology leader based in the Netherlands and the USA, has introduced the BlueSeal Horizon, a groundbreaking 3.0T MRI platform featuring the industry’s first helium-free 3.0T magnet.
This innovation was unveiled at RSNA 2025, marking a major scientific breakthrough with far-reaching implications for healthcare providers and patients worldwide.
The 3.0T MRI system represents the most sophisticated magnet technology currently in widespread clinical use, delivering high-resolution images critical for research and the diagnosis of the most complex medical cases.
It excels at imaging detailed structures like the brain, blood vessels, muscles, and joints.
Since 2018, Philips has pioneered helium-free MRI technology, installing over 2,000 of its 1.5T BlueSeal MRI systems globally and conserving more than 6 million liters of liquid helium.
Building on this success, Philips now extends these benefits to the 3.0T MRI segment, eliminating the need for helium refills and venting pipes.
This advance reduces installation complexity, shortens setup time, and lowers total operational risk.
Dr. Ioannis Panagiotelis, Business Leader, MR at Philips, emphasized that BlueSeal Horizon liberates MRI scanning from dependence on helium, a resource that is scarce and irreplaceable.
He highlighted that BlueSeal Horizon is not just helium-free; it represents a completely new platform, seamlessly combining state-of-the-art hardware innovations with AI-driven software.
This integration removes the usual compromise between imaging speed and precision, enhancing diagnostic outcomes for both clinicians and patients.
Philips is incorporating next-generation clinical AI into everyday workflows through BlueSeal Horizon, simplifying procedures, improving diagnostic accuracy, and increasing accessibility to advanced imaging.
The platform includes key AI-powered features such as SmartPlanning, Real-time Scan Preview, SmartSpeed Precise, and SmartReading.
SmartPlanning will extend to cardiac imaging, automating complex planning tasks that once required multiple manual steps, now achievable with a single click in as little as 30 seconds.
Real-time Scan Preview leverages NVIDIA’s accelerated computing platform and AI models to accelerate 3D image reconstruction, reduce noise, and minimize artifacts.
This allows radiologists to preview and adjust scan quality and speed instantly, optimizing efficiency for faster diagnoses.
SmartSpeed Precise utilizes dual AI algorithms to deliver scans up to three times faster and images up to 80% sharper, enabling clinicians to capture finer details quickly.
SmartReading integrates cloud-based AI tools directly into the MRI system, focusing on neurology and oncology applications, to streamline reading and reporting processes.
Together, these innovations bring powerful AI capabilities to the point of care, empowering radiology teams to achieve quicker, clearer, and more consistent imaging results, supporting accurate, first-time-right diagnoses.
