ADPHC collaborates with PureHealth to advance infectious disease surveillance in Abu Dhabi

The upgraded laboratory streamlines sample processing from reception through advanced analysis and genetic sequencing.

UAE—The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) has expanded its Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases (RLID-AD), strengthening the emirate’s ability to detect, monitor, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

This development positions Abu Dhabi as a leader in global health emergency preparedness.

Senior officials attended the launch event, including Dr. Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, General Director of ADPHC; Rashed Al Qubaisi, Group Chief Operating Officer at PureHealth; Arindam Haldar, CEO of PureLab; Dr. Rawya Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of Operations at PureLab; and Bader Al Qubaisi, CEO of SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).

Located at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and operated by PureLab under PureHealth, the expanded facility advances molecular diagnostics and infectious disease testing capabilities.

The upgraded laboratory streamlines sample processing from reception through advanced analysis and genetic sequencing.

These improvements significantly increase testing capacity, enabling rapid diagnosis and effective surveillance during epidemics or pandemics while maintaining strict quality and biosafety standards.

The expansion includes a BSL-3 mobile laboratory trailer that delivers on-site testing and analysis in outbreak areas.

This advanced system allows rapid response to infectious disease events, supporting Abu Dhabi’s surveillance and containment efforts.

Designed and manufactured to international standards, the BSL-3 unit strengthens the emirate’s laboratory biosafety framework and enhances epidemic preparedness.

Dr. Al Suwaidi emphasized that the expansion represents a major advancement in Abu Dhabi’s health security.

The emirate’s investments in advanced laboratory infrastructure and biosafety capabilities ensure it remains at the forefront of epidemic preparedness and response.

He highlighted that Abu Dhabi is reshaping healthcare by predicting risks, preventing disease, and taking proactive measures to build a healthier, safer community.

The integration of advanced molecular testing and the BSL-3 unit equips the laboratory to deliver faster, more accurate diagnostics.

These capabilities reduce dependence on outsourcing and enable better resource management and evidence-based decision-making.

Dr. Al Suwaidi stated that this milestone reinforces the vision of creating a resilient society supported by world-class public health systems.

The World Health Organization recognizes the Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases as a National Influenza Centre.

The facility also performs testing for measles, rubella, and other pathogens.

Over 50 percent of the laboratory’s workforce comprises UAE nationals, demonstrating strong local technical expertise in this critical field.

The laboratory expansion aligns with Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy to strengthen health system preparedness and resilience.

This initiative enhances the emirate’s capacity to respond effectively to infectious disease threats, protecting residents and visitors alike.
