CS Duale commissions advanced catheterization lab at AGC Tenwek in Bomet

AGC Tenwek Hospital operates 17 operating theatres alongside 44 ICU and HDU beds, providing critical care capacity that few facilities in the region can match.

KENYA—Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially commissioned a newly installed catheterization laboratory at AGC Tenwek Hospital, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s cardiac and vascular care capabilities.

The state-of-the-art facility introduces minimally invasive cardiac diagnostics and treatment options that will transform how Kenyans access life-saving heart services.

The advanced Cath Lab addresses a critical gap in the country’s healthcare system by reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

Kenyans requiring specialized cardiac procedures can now receive world-class care locally, saving families from the financial and emotional burden of overseas medical travel.

Positioning Kenya as a Regional Leader

During his tour of the 176-bed facility, Cabinet Secretary Duale highlighted AGC Tenwek Hospital’s unique position in the healthcare landscape.

The hospital stands as the only center in Kenya dedicated exclusively to cardiology and serves as the sole cardiothoracic center in East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

This distinction positions Kenya as a regional hub for advanced cardiac care, attracting patients from neighboring countries.

The hospital’s infrastructure reflects its commitment to comprehensive cardiac services.

AGC Tenwek Hospital operates 17 operating theatres alongside 44 ICU and HDU beds, providing critical care capacity that few facilities in the region can match.

The hospital serves over 234,000 patients annually, demonstrating its extensive regional reach and significant contribution toward achieving Universal Health Coverage across Kenya.

Cutting-Edge Technology Enhances Patient Care

The new Catheterization Laboratory features GE’s advanced AI-supported technology, designed to deliver safer, faster, and more patient-centered cardiac procedures.

The innovative system allows medical teams to pre-plan and simulate procedures before performing them, significantly reducing procedure times and minimizing physical strain on patients.

This technological advancement ensures that patients receive precision care with improved outcomes and reduced recovery periods.

Strengthening Patient Rights and Transparency

As part of his visit to Bomet County, Cabinet Secretary Duale unveiled the Bomet Health Centre Service Charter.

This initiative reinforces the Ministry of Health’s directive requiring mandatory adoption of service charters across all public and private health facilities throughout Kenya.

The charters promote transparency in healthcare delivery, prevent overcharging, and safeguard patients’ rights, ensuring that Kenyans receive fair and dignified treatment at all healthcare facilities.

Strategic Partnerships Drive Healthcare Excellence

The commissioning ceremony brought together key stakeholders in Kenya’s healthcare sector. Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Bomet Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok, Social Health Authority CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, and Digital Health Agency CEO Eng. Anthony Lenaiyara attended the event.

AGC Bishop Rev. Dr. Robert Kipkemoi Lang’at and Chief Executive Officer Ben Siele, along with Senior Executive Dr. Russell White and Robert Lang’at, hosted the Cabinet Secretary.

Cabinet Secretary Duale’s address emphasized the vital strength of partnerships between government institutions and faith-based healthcare providers.

He underscored the importance of equitable access to specialized healthcare services and recognized AGC Tenwek Hospital’s growing role as a national referral and training center of excellence.

The new facility reflects a shared commitment to advancing world-class cardiac care, building local healthcare capacity, and ensuring that geography or cost never prevents Kenyans from accessing life-saving treatment.
