Once fully operational, the manufacturing plant is expected to create direct employment opportunities for more than 500 people.

INDIA—Leading pharmaceutical manufacturer Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited has announced plans to invest Rs 500 crore (USD 590 million) in establishing a new manufacturing facility in Assam, India.
The project represents a significant expansion of the company’s production capabilities in Northeast India while bolstering the country’s domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing infrastructure.
Senior executives from the Mumbai-based pharmaceutical giant met with Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on February 4 to discuss various implementation aspects of the proposed project.
The meeting included Sun Pharma’s Senior Vice President Rahul Awasthi and Associate Vice President Ranjit Mohapatra, who presented detailed plans for the manufacturing facility.
Chief Secretary Kota shared details of the discussion through a post on X (formerly Twitter) on February 7 night, stating that the meeting focused on reviewing the company’s proposal for setting up pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the state.
The proposed facility will primarily focus on drug formulation manufacturing units serving the Indian market.
The company plans to execute the project through a phased approach, rolling out the investment across two distinct stages.
This strategic implementation timeline will allow Sun Pharma to gradually scale up operations while managing resources efficiently and adapting to local market dynamics.
Once fully operational, the manufacturing plant is expected to create direct employment opportunities for more than 500 people.
The jobs will be generated progressively as the facility moves through different phases of development and becomes fully operational, providing a significant boost to the local employment landscape.
During the meeting, officials discussed several critical infrastructure requirements necessary for successful project implementation.
Key topics included land acquisition needs, ensuring adequate water supply for manufacturing operations, securing reliable power connections, improving transportation connectivity to the facility, and accessing a pool of skilled workers to support plant operations.
Sun Pharmaceutical has committed to incorporating environmentally responsible practices throughout its manufacturing operations at the new facility.
The company outlined its sustainability strategy, which emphasizes efficient water usage, increased reliance on renewable energy sources, and implementing responsible waste management protocols that comply with environmental regulations and industry standards.
The discussion forms part of the Assam government’s broader initiative to attract substantial industrial investments to the state.
State officials are actively engaging with potential investors to promote employment generation, foster inclusive development opportunities, and drive sustainable economic growth across the region.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited stands as India’s largest pharmaceutical company and ranks among the top four pharmaceutical manufacturers globally.
The company operates an extensive international network with over 40 manufacturing facilities spread across five continents and maintains active operations in more than 100 countries worldwide, serving diverse healthcare markets and meeting stringent international quality standards.
