Kenya establishes National Committee to combat surge in diet-related diseases

The newly operational committee will spearhead the development and implementation of evidence-based food policies designed to protect Kenyan consumers.

KENYA—Kenya has taken a decisive step toward reshaping its food landscape by establishing the National Food Environment Policies Steering Committee, a high-level body tasked with addressing the country’s escalating crisis of diet-related diseases.

The Ministry of Health convened the committee’s inaugural meeting on February 26, 2026, at a Nairobi hotel.

Dr. Joel Gondi, Director of Primary Health Care, chaired the session on behalf of Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth.

Tackling Kenya’s double nutrition challenge

Health officials warn that Kenya now grapples with a troubling paradox: persistent malnutrition exists alongside surging rates of overweight, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers.

Dr. Amoth, speaking through Dr. Gondi, emphasized that foods laden with excessive sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats have flooded the market, creating an environment where poor dietary choices have become the default option rather than the exception.

The aggressive marketing strategies employed by food companies have amplified this problem, making unhealthy products more accessible and appealing than nutritious alternatives.

This shift in Kenya’s food environment directly fuels the country’s mounting burden of non-communicable diseases, which now threaten public health gains achieved in recent decades.

Comprehensive policy framework

The newly operational committee will spearhead the development and implementation of evidence-based food policies designed to protect Kenyan consumers.

Its mandate encompasses several critical areas that will reshape how food reaches the public.

Front-of-pack nutrition labelling will help consumers make informed choices at a glance.

Restrictions on marketing unhealthy foods and beverages to children will shield young Kenyans from predatory advertising.

The committee will also drive efforts to eliminate industrially produced trans fats from the food supply entirely.

Fiscal measures, including targeted taxation, will make healthy foods more affordable while discouraging consumption of harmful products.

Public institutions will adopt healthy food procurement standards, ensuring that schools, hospitals, and government facilities serve nutritious meals.

Food manufacturers will face pressure to reformulate their products, reducing harmful ingredients while maintaining taste and affordability.

Building on existing frameworks

The initiative strengthens existing national health strategies, including the Kenya Health Policy 2014–2030, the Kenya Nutrition Action Plan, and the National NCD Strategic Plan.

The committee’s work gains scientific credibility from the recently approved Kenya Nutrient Profile Model (2025), which establishes clear criteria for identifying and regulating unhealthy food products.

Multi-Sectoral collaboration

The steering committee draws expertise from government ministries, regulatory agencies, research institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners.

This diverse membership ensures coordinated action across sectors, moving beyond isolated interventions toward comprehensive food environment transformation.

With the committee formally declared operational, Kenya signals its commitment to prevention-focused health strategies that address the root causes of disease rather than merely treating symptoms.
