Mayo Clinic chooses Exer AI’s Exer Scan platform to modernize musculoskeletal diagnostics

Through the expanded partnership, Mayo Clinic will clinically integrate Exer AI’s hand and wrist module into its orthopaedic workflows to support musculoskeletal care.

USA—Exer AI, a company that uses computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse human movement, is expanding its partnership with Mayo Clinic to deploy its technology in orthopaedic workflows across the academic healthcare system.

The Colorado-based company’s Exer Scan App uses cameras on smartphones, tablets and laptops to capture joint movement and mobility data.

Through the expanded partnership, Mayo Clinic will clinically integrate Exer AI’s hand and wrist module into its orthopaedic workflows to support musculoskeletal care.

AI-powered movement assessment

The hand and wrist module can be used during in-person and virtual visits to assess mobility, strength proxies and range of motion through a camera-based examination.

The technology is designed to fit into clinicians’ existing workflows and automatically transfer assessment results into patients’ electronic health records through Epic.

Exer Scan is natively integrated with Epic’s electronic health record system and can send assessment results directly to an Epic SmartNote to support clinical documentation.

The platform also connects with Epic’s billing system to facilitate coding and reimbursement.

According to Zaw Thet, CEO and cofounder of Exer AI, the company began developing its computer vision technology in 2018.

Its researchers trained a neural network to recognize the human body using cameras placed in gyms, physical therapy clinics and doctors’ offices.

The company collected millions of hours of video footage and analyzed it frame by frame, manually identifying body parts to train the AI model.

Exer AI subsequently used the technology to determine how specific movement patterns could indicate different medical conditions.

Expanding clinical applications

To develop these capabilities, Exer AI established research partnerships covering 14 medical disciplines, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, pain management and spine care.

The company has since developed about 144 assessments covering movements and functions such as tremors, sit-to-stand performance, balance, joint range of motion, gait dynamics and functional movement.

Mayo Clinic became one of Exer AI’s early research partners when the organizations began collaborating in 2024.

The latest agreement moves the relationship further into clinical deployment by incorporating the company’s hand and wrist assessment technology into orthopedic care.

Thet said the partnership could also provide a pathway for Exer AI to expand its technology across a network of about 40 other hospital and healthcare systems associated with the Mayo Clinic platform.

New modules in development

Exer AI plans to broaden its technology to additional clinical applications.

The company is developing a sports medicine module focused on athletes returning to sport, which Thet expects to launch by the end of 2026 or early 2027.

The company also plans to continue developing additional assessments and expanding the range of conditions that its AI-powered movement analysis can evaluate.
