Johnson & Johnson receives CE Mark for new reusable contact lens

USA—Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has received the CE Mark for its ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2 Week contact lens, a reusable lens designed with the company’s latest MAX technologies.

J&J plans to launch the lens in selected European countries later this year.

The company expects to expand availability in 2027 and 2028, subject to regulatory approvals and market conditions.

New technologies target comfort and clarity

According to J&J, comfort and visual clarity remain important considerations for contact lens wearers.

The company said increasing exposure to digital devices and blue violet light can place additional demands on the eyes, potentially contributing to discomfort and reduced visual clarity.

The ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2 Week lens incorporates several technologies designed to address these concerns.

These include the OptiBlue Light Filter, which filters at least 60% of blue-violet light, and TearStable Technology, which is designed to help maintain moisture on the eye’s surface.

The lens also provides Class 1 ultraviolet (UV) blocking to help protect the eyes from UV radiation, including exposure to sunlight.

J&J said the combination of these technologies is designed to support clear vision and comfortable wear during activities such as using digital devices, spending time outdoors, and driving at night.

Designed for existing fitting processes

For eye care practitioners, J&J designed the ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2 Week lens to work with the existing fitting process used for ACUVUE OASYS 2 Week lenses.

This approach is intended to make it easier for practitioners already familiar with the ACUVUE OASYS 2 Week platform to incorporate the new lens into their practice.

Jacqueline Henderson, group chair of J&J MedTech’s Vision business, said reusable contact lens wearers should not have to choose between comfort and clear vision as their daily activities increase.

“With ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2 Week, we are bringing our most advanced ACUVUE technologies to a reusable lens, helping more people see clearly and feel comfortable throughout the full two-week wear cycle,” Henderson said.

The ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2 Week lens is part of the wider ACUVUE OASYS MAX portfolio, which J&J developed to provide advanced options for people who use reusable contact lenses.

In July, J&J also received US Food and Drug Administration approval for its Dual Energy Thermocool SmartTouch SF Platform.
