Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics opens US$200M Wisconsin iPSC manufacturing hub to scale cell therapy production

Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics will use the expanded site to produce its iCell product portfolio, which plays a key role in new approach methods (NAMs) used in modern drug discovery and toxicity testing.

USA—Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics has inaugurated a new headquarters and an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) manufacturing facility in Madison, Wisconsin, marking a major expansion of its regenerative medicine capabilities.

The development forms part of a US$200 million investment aimed at strengthening large-scale production of iPSC-based research tools and services.

With the new site now operational, the company expects to increase its output capacity for iPSC products to nearly four times its previous levels, supporting rising global demand from pharmaceutical and academic researchers.

Advanced facility design and capabilities

The 175,000-square-foot facility integrates advanced laboratories for cell culture manufacturing, process development, and gene editing research.

It has been designed with scalability in mind, allowing future expansion into broader cell therapy manufacturing, including both investigational drug production and eventual commercial supply.

In addition, the site supports flexible production systems that can accommodate a wide range of iPSC-derived applications, positioning the company to respond to evolving needs in regenerative medicine and drug discovery.

Supporting next-generation drug discovery tools

Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics will use the expanded site to produce its iCell product portfolio, which plays a key role in new approach methods (NAMs) used in modern drug discovery and toxicity testing.

These iPSC-derived cells help researchers model human biology more accurately, reducing reliance on traditional preclinical testing systems.

As demand for more predictive and ethical research tools grows, the company aims to strengthen its role as a supplier of standardised, high-quality cell models to global life sciences organizations.

Leadership Perspective on industry Growth

Toshihisa Iida, corporate vice president of Fujifilm Corporation and chairman of Fujifilm Biotechnologies, said the facility comes at a pivotal moment for the iPSC field.

He noted that the company has helped define industry standards for more than two decades.

He added that the expansion will enable Fujifilm to better meet the increasing demand from pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and universities working on next-generation therapies and drug development programs.

Opening ceremony and Local Engagement

Fujifilm marked the launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by senior executives and local officials, including Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.

The event highlighted the company’s long-term investment in the region and its collaboration with state and city stakeholders in advancing life sciences infrastructure.

Strategic partnerships and global biomanufacturing growth

Fujifilm Biotechnologies recently extended its collaboration with immunology company argenx to manufacture drug substance for efgartigimod at its Holly Springs, North Carolina site beginning in 2028.

The agreement reflects the company’s broader strategy to scale biomanufacturing capacity across multiple regions while supporting complex biologic drug production pipelines.
