Medtronic completes US$550M acquisition of Scientia Vascular to strengthen the neurovascular access portfolio

IRELAND—Medtronic plc, a global healthcare technology company, has completed its acquisition of Scientia Vascular, a privately held medical device firm headquartered in Salt Lake City.

The deal is valued at US$550 million, subject to customary post-closing adjustments, and may include additional undisclosed earn-out and milestone payments.

The acquisition strengthens Medtronic’s position in the neurovascular space by expanding its access technology offerings used in complex neurological procedures.

Expanding neurovascular access technologies

Scientia Vascular develops advanced access products designed to improve simplicity and precision during neurovascular interventions.

Its portfolio includes guidewires and catheters that help physicians navigate challenging vascular pathways when treating conditions such as stroke, aneurysms, and other cerebrovascular disorders.

These devices integrate with Medtronic’s existing neurovascular suite, allowing clinicians to operate across a more complete procedural workflow.

As a result, the combined platform is expected to improve procedural efficiency and enhance treatment consistency in highly complex cases.

Rick Randall, Chief Executive Officer of Scientia Vascular, said the acquisition marks a natural progression for the company.

He noted that Scientia’s mission to improve patient outcomes and support physicians aligns closely with Medtronic’s global healthcare vision.

He added that the company expects broader reach through Medtronic’s established international distribution network.

Linnea Burman, Senior Vice President and President of Medtronic’s Neurovascular business within its Neuroscience Portfolio, said the addition of Scientia’s technologies will simplify complex procedures.

She emphasised that combining complementary innovations will help clinicians deliver faster, more reliable care while expanding treatment access for more patients.

Addressing the global stroke treatment challenge

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide, where rapid intervention is critical to patient survival and recovery.

Each minute of restricted blood flow results in a significant loss of brain cells, making speed and precision essential in neurovascular care.

However, cerebral blood vessels often present highly complex and tortuous pathways, which can delay access to the site of blockage or aneurysm.

These anatomical challenges increase procedural difficulty and may affect treatment success rates.

Scientia’s platform is designed to improve navigability through such complex anatomy, enabling physicians to reach target sites more efficiently and deliver therapy with greater accuracy.

Medtronic continues to focus on targeted acquisitions that enhance its core therapeutic areas, particularly within neuroscience and minimally invasive technologies.
