Medtronic launches MiniMed 780G System with Abbott Instinct Sensor Integration in the US

The integration of the Instinct sensor expands Medtronic’s portfolio of compatible glucose monitoring options, joining two recently introduced alternatives: the Simplera Sync and Guardian 4 sensors.

USA—Medtronic has introduced a significant advancement in diabetes management technology by commercially launching its MiniMed 780G system integrated with Abbott’s Instinct sensor across the United States.

This collaboration combines Medtronic’s automated insulin delivery capabilities with Abbott’s proven continuous glucose monitoring technology, creating a comprehensive solution for individuals managing diabetes.

The Instinct sensor brings Abbott’s advanced continuous glucose monitoring technology to the partnership, offering users up to 15 days of extended wear.

This extended wearing period reduces the frequency of sensor changes, providing greater convenience for users while maintaining consistent glucose monitoring throughout the two-week period.

The sensor continuously tracks glucose levels and transmits this critical data to the insulin delivery system in real time.

When paired with the MiniMed 780G system, the Instinct sensor enables automatic insulin adjustments every five minutes based on current glucose readings.

This capability to make frequent adjustments allows the system to respond dynamically to changing glucose levels throughout the day and night.

The MiniMed 780G represents Medtronic’s flagship automated insulin delivery platform, specifically engineered to minimize both hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic episodes by continuously adapting insulin delivery based on real-time glucose data.

The integration of the Instinct sensor expands Medtronic’s portfolio of compatible glucose monitoring options, joining two recently introduced alternatives: the Simplera Sync and Guardian 4 sensors.

This growing selection reflects Medtronic’s strategic approach to providing users with multiple sensor choices that can accommodate different lifestyles, preferences, and clinical needs.

Each sensor option maintains compatibility with the MiniMed 780G system while offering distinct features regarding wear duration, insertion methods, and user experience.

These product additions form part of Medtronic’s broader diabetes management ecosystem, which focuses on simplifying daily diabetes care while enabling greater personalization.

The company aims to reduce the complexity and burden of diabetes management by offering integrated systems that automate critical insulin-delivery decision-making processes.

Que Dallara, who serves as Medtronic Diabetes President and Executive Vice President, emphasized the significance of this product launch for expanding access to proven diabetes management technology.

Dallara explained that the launch represents an important advancement in bringing the clinically validated outcomes of the MiniMed 780G system to a wider population of people living with diabetes.

The executive highlighted that Medtronic is building a smart dosing ecosystem centered on choice, allowing each person to select a solution that aligns with their individual lifestyle and needs.

Dallara further articulated Medtronic’s fundamental mission to make daily life with diabetes more manageable and predictable, ultimately enabling greater freedom and improved health outcomes.

The company’s objective centers on delivering confidence and peace of mind not only to people living with diabetes but also to their families and loved ones, allowing everyone to live without compromise.

In April, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Medtronic’s disposable Simplera Sync sensor for use with the MiniMed 780G system, marking another milestone in the company’s sensor development program.

Additionally, last month Medtronic initiated a limited market release of its Signia Circular Stapler, which incorporates Tri-Staple technology designed for surgical procedures involving the alimentary tract.
