QuantumCell inks US$2.2B Alzheimer’s deal with AlzeCure Pharma

Under the agreement, QuantumCell will obtain global rights to AlzeCure’s NeuroRestore platform, including its lead drug candidate, ACD856.

DENMARK—Danish biotech startup QuantumCell has signed a licensing and collaboration agreement worth more than US$2.2 billion with Swedish biotechnology company AlzeCure Pharma to strengthen its pipeline of treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

The agreement comes less than a year after QuantumCell emerged from stealth mode and marks one of the largest biotechnology licensing deals announced this year.

Deal combines upfront funding and milestone payments

Under the agreement, QuantumCell will obtain global rights to AlzeCure’s NeuroRestore platform, including its lead drug candidate, ACD856.

AlzeCure will receive an upfront payment of US$12 million, including a US$5 million strategic investment in the Swedish company at a 30% premium to its average share price over the previous 10 trading days.

The remaining value of the transaction will come through development and commercial milestone payments.

AlzeCure will also receive tiered royalties ranging from the single digits to low double digits on future product sales.

The announcement triggered a sharp rise in AlzeCure’s share price, with the stock climbing to its highest level since 2022 as investors responded positively to the agreement.

ACD856 targets brain repair pathways

NeuroRestore focuses on developing small-molecule medicines that improve memory and learning in people with cognitive disorders.

Although the platform is primarily being developed for Alzheimer’s disease, researchers believe its mechanism could also support future treatments for other neurological conditions.

Its lead candidate, ACD856, enhances signalling through the nerve growth factor receptor TrkA and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor receptor TrkB.

These receptors play an essential role in maintaining healthy neurons, strengthening synaptic connections, and supporting brain plasticity.

According to AlzeCure, preclinical studies have shown that ACD856 produced neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and disease-modifying effects.

The candidate also achieved encouraging results in a Phase Ib clinical study reported in June 2026.

The trial showed that repeated dosing at higher levels than previously tested was safe and well tolerated.

Researchers also observed the expected increase in drug concentrations in both blood and cerebrospinal fluid, providing data that will guide dose selection in future clinical studies.

QuantumCell keeps development plans under wraps

QuantumCell has not disclosed which disease indications it intends to pursue with ACD856.

The company has also revealed little about its broader research strategy since its public launch in December 2025, with financial backing from Lundbeckfonden and Novo Holdings.

The company describes itself as a technology-driven biology business developing high-fidelity virtual cell models that combine advanced sensing technologies, autonomous robotics, and artificial intelligence.

It aims to predict how medicines will behave in patients before they enter clinical testing.

The NeuroRestore agreement follows another major licensing success for AlzeCure.

In June, the company entered into a separate agreement with Eli Lilly for worldwide rights to its Alzheimer’s candidate, ACD680, valued at up to US$1 billion, reflecting growing pharmaceutical interest in its neuroscience portfolio.
