Liberia to host the 5th National Scientific Conference to strengthen health security
The three day conference will take place at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town and will bring together scientists, researchers, healthcare workers, students, surveillance officers, academics and international experts.
LIBERIA—The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) will host its 5th Annual National Scientific Conference from October 14 to 16, 2026, bringing researchers and health professionals together to advance research, innovation, and health security in the country.
The three-day conference will take place at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town and will bring together scientists, researchers, healthcare workers, students, surveillance officers, academics and international experts.
Strengthening Liberia’s research capacity
Dr. Julius S. M. Gilayereh Sr., Deputy Director General for Technical Services at NPHIL, said the conference forms part of the Institute’s efforts to strengthen Liberia’s scientific and research capacity.
NPHIL was established in December 2016 to provide technical leadership in public health and safety, particularly in preventing, detecting and responding to public health emergencies.
The Institute also has a mandate to promote scientific research and strengthen the country’s ability to use evidence in addressing health challenges.
NPHIL is organizing the conference in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, government institutions and agencies, and research partners.
These include the Partnership for Research on Emergency and Infectious Diseases (PREVAIL), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Africa CDC, and the University of Liberia.
According to Gilayereh, the annual meeting has grown into an important forum where researchers and health professionals can present findings, exchange knowledge, and build research networks.
Broad focus on public health
Bode I. Shobayo, Director of Public Health and Biomedical Research at NPHIL, said this year’s conference will seek to strengthen the culture of science and research in Liberia.
The programme will cover a wide range of public health issues, including health systems and universal health coverage, disease surveillance and epidemics, emerging and tropical diseases, patient safety, climate and the environment, and One Health.
Other areas will include health informatics and artificial intelligence, maternal, newborn and child health, communicable and non communicable diseases, mental health, and health policy and financing.
Shobayo said the organizers had received more than 70 abstracts, with further submissions expected ahead of the conference.
Researchers invited to share findings
The conference will feature scientific presentations, keynote addresses, international speakers, and plenary sessions examining current research and public health priorities.
Researchers and health professionals from Liberia and other African countries, including Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Ghana, and Nigeria, are expected to attend.
NPHIL is encouraging students, surveillance officers, healthcare workers, researchers, and academics at county and district levels to submit abstracts and present research relevant to the conference theme.
The organizers said the meeting will provide a forum for researchers to share work being conducted in Liberia, exchange scientific knowledge and strengthen collaboration among health institutions.
The conference will also create opportunities for researchers and policymakers to explore how scientific evidence can inform public health interventions and policies.
