Abu Dhabi designates three hospitals as Breast Cancer Oncology Centres of Excellence
The designation recognises the hospitals’ specialised capabilities in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, including multidisciplinary care, advanced technologies, clinical research and patient support.
UAE—The Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DoH) has designated Burjeel Cancer Institute at Burjeel Medical City, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and SEHA Tawam Hospital as Oncology Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for breast cancer.
The designation recognises the hospitals’ specialised capabilities in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, including multidisciplinary care, advanced technologies, clinical research and patient support.
Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women in the UAE.
In Abu Dhabi, breast cancer screening rates increased by 85% over the past year, according to DoH, highlighting the emirate’s focus on prevention and early detection.
The three centres provide care spanning diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and survivorship.
Their services bring together specialised teams across multiple disciplines to coordinate treatment in line with international standards.
Burjeel Cancer Institute
Burjeel Cancer Institute was recognised for its specialised breast oncology services, supported by its One Step Breast Clinic.
The clinic brings together consultation, imaging, biopsy, pathology review and treatment planning within 24 hours, helping accelerate diagnosis and treatment decisions.
The institute also provides Contrast Enhanced Mammography, advanced oncoplastic and minimally invasive surgery, and radiation oncology services.
It also operates a mobile mammography programme across the UAE to support breast cancer screening and education.
Professor Humaid Bin Harmal Al Shamsi, Chief Executive Officer of Burjeel Cancer Institute, said the designation recognises the institute’s commitment to specialised breast cancer care, research and innovation.
He said the institute has developed a patient centred model that combines rapid diagnosis, advanced treatment options and collaboration among medical specialties.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi received the designation for its management of complex breast cancer cases through a multidisciplinary team of specialised physicians.
Its services include oncoplastic surgery, robotic and endoscopic breast procedures, lymphatic-preserving techniques and microsurgical breast reconstruction.
The hospital also provides PET imaging, Contrast Enhanced Mammography, MRI-guided biopsy and access to therapeutic clinical trials.
Its radiation oncology programme includes AI powered adaptive radiation therapy with real time daily replanning. The facility also conducts in house HER2 FISH testing.
Dr Stephen Grobmyer, Chair of the Cancer Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said the designation reflects the hospital’s focus on innovation, research and multidisciplinary expertise in cancer care.
SEHA Tawam Hospital
SEHA Tawam Hospital, part of PureHealth Group, was recognised for its breast oncology expertise and role as a referral centre for complex and advanced breast cancer cases.
The hospital was the first facility in the UAE to receive international accreditation as a breast cancer centre through the National Accreditation Programme for Breast Centres.
Its capabilities include the Brevera Breast Biopsy System, AI-enabled contrast-enhanced digital mammography, CyberKnife and RapidArc radiation therapy.
Dr Sultan Mohamed Abdulrahman Mohamed Alkaram, Chief Executive Officer for the Al Ain Region at SEHA, said the designation reflects the hospital’s commitment to multidisciplinary cancer care, research and advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies.
Centre of Excellence requirements
DoH designates CoEs to provide specialised medical programmes that meet defined quality and clinical standards.
Facilities are assessed on clinical outcomes, patient experience, safety and quality, workforce competency, medical education, research and residency programmes, as well as relevant accreditations.
The designation is intended for licensed healthcare facilities that meet DoH’s minimum requirements for specialised Centres of Excellence.
