Biopharma to establish pharmaceutical manufacturing operations at Naivasha SEZ

The investment at Naivasha SEZ is expected to contribute to technology transfer, skills development and job creation while strengthening Kenya’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity.

KENYA—The Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) has signed a lease agreement with Biopharma Limited, paving the way for the pharmaceutical company to establish manufacturing operations at the Naivasha Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The agreement follows SEZA’s licensing of Biopharma to undertake pharmaceutical manufacturing within the zone.

It marks a key step in the company’s expansion while supporting SEZA’s efforts to attract investment into strategic industries that can strengthen Kenya’s manufacturing and healthcare value chains.

Expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing

Biopharma is an established pharmaceutical company involved in the development, manufacture, and marketing of prescription medicines, over-the-counter (OTC) products and generic medicines.

The company has a portfolio of more than 300 products covering a range of dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, liquids, lotions, gels, ointments and creams.

The company places a strong focus on quality and technology throughout its manufacturing operations.

Its quality-control processes cover multiple stages of production, from testing raw materials and monitoring manufacturing processes to packaging and distribution.

Through the new investment, Biopharma will expand its manufacturing footprint in Kenya while increasing its capacity to produce pharmaceutical products locally.

The project is also expected to support import substitution by reducing reliance on imported medicines and strengthening domestic production capabilities.

Supporting Kenya’s pharmaceutical sector

The investment at Naivasha SEZ is expected to contribute to technology transfer, skills development and job creation while strengthening Kenya’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity.

It also supports the country’s ambition to develop a competitive pharmaceutical industry capable of serving both domestic and regional markets.

In addition, the project aligns with Biopharma’s vision of becoming “Africa’s leading healthcare company by providing cost-effective & high-quality drugs to the people of Africa.”

Establishing manufacturing operations within the SEZ will provide the company with a platform to expand its production capabilities and pursue opportunities across African markets.

From licensing to implementation

The signing of the lease agreement moves the project from the licensing stage to implementation and further highlights the growing role of Naivasha SEZ in attracting high-value manufacturing investments.

SEZA will support Biopharma throughout the investment implementation process and provide an enabling environment as the company develops its manufacturing operations.

The authority is also seeking to attract additional manufacturers to Kenya as part of efforts to promote local production for African and international markets.

The Biopharma project therefore adds to ongoing initiatives aimed at positioning Naivasha SEZ as a destination for pharmaceutical and other strategic manufacturing investments.
