GHANCOY 5 supports Guinea-Bissau Hospital with medicines under ECOWAS mission
The donation formed part of GHANCOY 5’s planned civil-military cooperation activities, which seek to strengthen relations between the military contingent and local communities.
GUINEA-BISSAU—Ghana Company 5 (GHANCOY 5), serving under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau, has donated medicines and medical supplies to the Hospital Militar Principal (HMP) in the capital, Bissau.
The donation formed part of GHANCOY 5’s planned civil-military cooperation activities, which seek to strengthen relations between the military contingent and local communities.
The initiative also aims to build trust between the mission and the population while supporting broader efforts to promote peace, security and economic stability in Guinea-Bissau.
Hospital receives medical supplies
During the handover, the Director of HMP, Colonel Ramalho Cunda, thanked the GHANCOY 5 contingent for the donation and said the supplies would support the hospital’s efforts to provide care to patients.
Colonel Cunda said the hospital provides healthcare at little or no cost to many patients, noting that many people seeking outpatient services cannot afford to pay for treatment.
He added that the donated medicines would help the facility meet some of the needs of patients who rely on its services.
He assured the contingent that the hospital would use the supplies appropriately and said they would help save lives and ease the burden on patients and their families.
The donated items included antibiotics, medicines for hypertension and diabetes, as well as non-medical consumables required for routine hospital operations.
Support for military and civilian patients
Speaking during the handover, GHANCOY 5 Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Danful, said the donation was intended to support both military and civilian patients who cannot afford essential medicines.
He said the contingent recognised the challenges faced by patients who struggle to meet the cost of treatment and expressed hope that the supplies would help reduce some of the financial pressure on them and their families.
The donation was part of GHANCOY 5’s wider engagement with the local population during its deployment in Guinea-Bissau.
Through its civil-military cooperation activities, the contingent has sought to maintain positive relations with communities while contributing to humanitarian and community support initiatives.
Lieutenant Colonel Danful was accompanied by the Contingent Second-in-Command, Major Collins Nkansah; Senior Medical Officer, Major Sylvester Alhassan; Logistics Officer, Major Prince Opoku Agyemang; and other GHANCOY 5 personnel during the presentation.
